Aze’s Ranger Guide (FFXI linkshell)

I wanted to let everyone in on the Ranger class. I’d like to post more on some other jobs and such, guess I’ll see how well this one is accepted first. Hope it’s helpful! ^^

So rangers are the premium melee damage dealers, and one of the most expensive jobs to sustain in the game. The nice thing is you usually won’t have a problem getting a party. Seems everyone wants rangers for their damage, and majority of the time you’ll be asked to pull. I myself have been asked to tank as well when the obvious options aren’t available. I rarely agree to do it unless I’m absolutely confident in my healer(s), and that this mob isn’t going to knock me for 500 pts. In those situations, Ranger has the ability to control the hate rather well, and with the moderate defense, agility/evasion, it’s better if we do it than a mage try to handle it ( I would highly discourage doing it unless you really need to get some xp going ). Now for the nitty gritties of ranger-dom

Ranger is a melee class, and consequently melee stats matter, but they are looked at differently than how a Warrior utilizes their stats.
The most important stat for a ranger, in my opinion, is Agility. There really is no way around it. Agility is the basis by which your ranged accuracy is determined. It works out nicely because the more accurate you are, the less likely you are to get hit. Woot for Agility!
The other stats can really go in any order; Attack(derived from strength and combat skill), Dexterity, and Defense.
I prefer to take pure attack over Strength. Ranged Attack is derived from your Ranged Combat Skill + Attack + Dexterity. Likewise your general Attack comes from your Strength, but Attack is a small part of Ranged Attack, and Strength is a small part of Attack, so Strength plays a decreased roll in the final result, however it does help. Now by having a higher Dexterity, you’re going to have a better melee accuracy and crit potential as well, meaning your TP will raise quicker also.

Now that we got the stat lineup out of the way, next is the races. There really is no bad race, there may be races better than the other, but each seems to have their advantages. Mithra is the obvious choice, natural Agility and Dexterity, however a generally lower Attack/Strength. Elvaan and Galka are a toss up, both having a low Dexterity and Agility, but a high Attack. Taru have an especially high Agility, but incredibly low Hit Points. Humes are just balanced across the board, they don’t stand out anywhere but have no real deficiency anywhere either. My personal choice was Elvaan, but Ranger wasn’t my first choice, it just kinda happened, and it’s happened rather well for me I think.

Next on my checklist is the Traits and Abilities.
First you have Alertness at 5, a general low effective Sneak. Never rely on this to happen, but it does generally let you get closer to a Sound Aggressive mob.
Then you have an Accuracy Bonus at 10 that affects both Melee and Ranged.
Third Ability is Rapid Shot at 15. It basically allows you to fire your weapon without the cocking cast time.
At 20 you get a natural resistance to Poison. I have honeslty seen this work 3 times. If the Resist Poison kicked in, the screen will read Resist! an something to the affect of it being resisted.
When you reach 30, you’ll receive another Accuracy Bonus. You won’t see it because it just stacks on the previous bonus.
There’s another Poison Resist bonus at 40, and a third Accuracy Bonus at 50.

Now for the Abilities you get. The Two Hour skill is first, but you also get Sharpshot and the option for Wide Scan under your Map and Markers screen.
The Two Hour is Eagle Eye Shot, a devastating short-ranged attack. Sharpshot lasts about a minute and increased your Ranged Accuracy; recast is 5 minutes.
Wide scan allows you see all NPC and Mobs within a certain area of the map. It also allows you to Track a particular subject, or scan a smaller area outside of your immediate scan for a particular type Mob. It’s incredibly useful for NM Hunts and for general farming.
At 10 there’s a relatively useless skill called Scavenger. It allows you to “scavenge” the immediate area for resources or the occasional quiver of arrows. I supposed you could run a Scavenge Macro while you sleep and see what comes up; recast is 5 minutes.
You get what will be your favorite ability at 30, Barrage. That will basically notch in 5 arrows or other ammo and fires them in one blow. You can miss any or all of them, so I’d recommend using Sharpshot just before Barrage; recast 5min.
Shadowbind is the skill at 40. It’s a fast shot, deals no damage, and temporarily binds the target. I’ve yet to see it fail and I had to use it on a Lesser Manticore recently. The length of bind however will vary on difficulty of the target; recast 5 minutes.

Your Weapon Skills are pretty effective also, goes right along with the Ranger’s high damage theme. I’ve only maxed out my Archery skill, but as far as the three Weapon Skills prior to the first level cap, Marksmanship and Archery skills have the same effect.
Flaming Arrow will be the first one. It’s a high damage, Fire based attack. The higher the TP, the more damage.
Piercing Arrow is second. It’s also a high damage weapon skill, but with greater TP, it’s more likely to ignore defenses.
Dulling Arrow is third. It’s a moderate damage weapon skill, but with greater TP, it’s more likely to lower target’s Intelligence.
I will update the Weapon Skills, Traits, and Abilities as I learn more about them, these will take you up to 50, your first level cap. At this point, I’m nearing 48 myself, so I don’t want to talk about anything I’m not completely confident about. I will mention that Sidewinder is the fourth weapon skill and will be able to learn it around 55. You go a long time and several levels between Dulling Arrow and Sidewinder, but once you get Sidewinder, the Weapon Skills become more frequent again.

So now you think want to be a ranger? Yea, I like high damage too. It’s a power trip. You know the only other person netting your level of damage is the black mage, and he only has so much MP. Unfortunately, a warrior is only as good as his sword, a good sword comes at a price. Depending what stats you prioritize, you may not spend as much as some. Now you don’t need an Emperor’s Hairpin or a pair of Leaping boots, but they’re nice if you can get them. It is good to shell out top dollar for your ranged weapon. In my case it was +1 bows across the board, with the exception of my Ryl Archer’s Longbow. For maximum damage, longbows are the preferred bow. The speed of shortbows doesn’t make up for their lack of damage. Once you hit Power Bow +1, each subsequent +1 longbow does higher damage with greater bonus to Ranged Attack. The Artifact bow is a good bow, however it’s shortbow based, therefore lower damage, but good speed. If shortbows are your thing, you can look forward to the Sniper’s Bow. Otherwise just get it so you can continue with your AF quest.

My Bow order was: Shortbow +1, Royal Archer’s Longbow, Power Bow +1, Great Bow +1, Battle Bow +1, and have a War Bow +1 in my locker waiting for me. On Asura, my prices starting at Power Bow +1 were 30k, 55-60k, 60-70k, 75-95k.
As far as Arrows, I went with Stone Arrow, Iron Arrow/Fang Arrow, Silver Arrow, and I’m still using Scorpion Arrows. Iron and Silver you can get in Quivers, all others only come in 99 stacks. Now, because you run out of Quiver options, it’s good to do Gobbie Bag quests to increase your personal Inventory, and possibly even the Mog Safe quests to give you more room to store other items, like extra arrows for quick restock. It’s pretty obvious that crafting is worth your while. Creating your own arrows and bolts will cut down ammo cost considerably. The only downside is you have to continue to fund the crafting skill to keep it caught up to whatever you’re using. This can eat up a lot of time, and money that may have been better spent on arrows outright.

Our armor issue is both a curse and a blessing. We just don’t have very much armor to choose from. This can keep armor cost down, but you end up like me, and wearing Lizard set straight into Khazam. Killing Mandragora’s with my 60k bow … oh, and I’m wearing no0bish armor, don’t let me get hit. Your choice of armor and when you upgrade is completely up to you. I preferred to hold out for a piece that affected my stats as opposed to increasing my defense and wasting money on armor. The armor I’ve been usually seen in is…
Centurion’s Visor, Ranger’s Necklace, 2 Beetle Earring +1’s, Iron Scale Mail, Swordbelt, 2 Beetle Ring +1’s, Nomad’s Mantle, Martial Slacks, Magna M Gauntlets, and Magna M Ledelssons. However I recently replaced Iron Scale Mail with Brigandine, and sold my Martial Slacks for Gil, replaced with Iron Cuisses, and am in the process of getting the Magna M Chausses. As you can see, you don’t need all the absolute best gear, but instead make sure to have good gear, and keep a balance on your stats. If you gear too much for Agility and Accuracy, you hurt you damage. If you gear too much to damage, you’ll never hit.

If anyone needs it, I can post the Ranger Flag quest, and the AH Quests, but their pretty well discussed in other threads. I just wantd to cover some of the misconceptions and what goes into being a ranger

Knowing your way around is a big part of FFXI. To do this, you need to acquire a large number of maps. Some maps are attainable from Vendors in cities (sold by Region, covering multiple maps at once, or individually), some through quests, and others must be found in treasures/coffers. On top of that, world maps/zone connector maps are useful. These are user-made, since there’s no good representation of a helpful world map in-game. These will all be discussed in this tutorial.

3 – Chest and Coffer Maps

Besides maps that are bought, there are some maps that you must find in treasure chests and coffers. Please note, these are two distinctly different kinds of treasures that spawn, and both require a different kind of key. For the list of treasure spawns please see:
http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/treasure/title.html

Maps that much be found in COFFERS

- Kuftal Tunnel Map

# Treasure chest key dropped by: rivulet/brook/riparian sahagins, ghasts, oozes, grotto pugils, ironshells, bigclaws, and vampire bats. Note: both treasure chests and coffers exist in this area, it is the treasure chests that will contain the map.

4 – Quest Maps

There are also a number of maps that can only be obtained by doing certain quests. Here they are:

- Horutoto Ruins
This quest starts in Windurst Waters at the Opistery. Haria-Origa (F-8) sends you on a quest to talk to Ipupu who’s in West Sarutabaruta. Ipupu is somewhat hidden inside the tower located between J-8 and I-8 in West Sarutabaruta. Note: You do not enter the tower area. He is within the tower but still in the West Sarutabaruta area. Once you talk to Ipupu, head back to Windurst Waters and talk to Haria-Origa again for your reward: the Horutoto Ruins map!

- King Ranperre’s Tomb
This quest starts in Northern San’Doria at (F-3). Talk to Aurege and you will see him have a conversation, talk with him again and he’ll tell you about how gambling is bad. You’ll wind up being asked to go see Varchet who’s located at (L-6) in South San’Doria. Gamble with him until you win, then return to Aurege who will thank you and give you your reward: the map of King Ranperre’s Tomb!

- Gusgen Mines
This quest starts in Port Bastok around (H-5)~(G-5). Talk to Gustav and he will tell you about how his boss has gone missing. You must return to him with a Dog Collar, which is dropped off of Black Wolves, which spawn at night in North Gustaberg. Once you trade him the dog collar you are given your reward: the map of Gusgen Mines!

- Dangruf Wadi
This quest starts in Bastok Markets at (H-10). Talk to Degenhard who is an old man with plenty of energy, who claims you could never discover the secret to his youth. Trade him a bone chip (which can be found off of skeleton type monsters, bought at bonecrafting guild shops, or simply bought off of the auction house) to unveil his secret and get your reward: the map of Dangruf Wadi!

- Bostineaux Oubliette
This quest starts in the port town of Mhaura. Talk to Blandine to find out she is worried about her husband who took the boat from Mhaura to Selbina. Go upstairs and talk to Grimr and Zexu, they’ll tell you about how he had a Sand Charm. Go back to talk to Blandine for a short cut scene. The Sand Charm is a drop off of the Crossbone monsters who will randomly appear and attack the boat when “pirates” pull up. Note: you do not need to have started this quest already to get the drop. The monsters should be doable 1v1 at ~LV 30 for a melee or dmg dealer type. But be careful, they’re aggressive and link. Once you trade the Sand Charm back, you get your reward: the map of Bostineaux Oubliette!

- Fei’Yin
This quest starts again with Haria-Origa (F-8) in Windurst waters. However, you must have done the Horutoto Ruins map and the two book return quests (issued from the other half of the Opistery), along with have enough fame in order to get this quest. Once you get it, Haria-Origa asks for a turnip (which can be bought at the culinary guild store or from the auction house, or grown in your garden) and a slime oil, which drops off of slime-type monsters and can also be found under Materials > Alchemy at the auction house. Once you get her these items you receive your reward: the map of Fei’Yin and even 3000 gil!

- Castle Zvahl
This quest start in Ru`Lude gardens (in Jeuno). Talk to Radeivpart at (H-9) and he will ask you for a Flame Degen. These are dropped off of Napalms in Ordelle’s Caves, or can be crafted with 41 Alchemy skill (earth crystal > 1 firesand, 1 slime oil, 1 degen), or can simply be bought at the auction house. Turning this in will get you your reward: the map of Castle Zvahl!

- Northern Regions
This quests starts in the Chateau d’Oraguille (San’Doria). First, you must gain access to this Chateau. That requires either rank 2 in San`Doria or rank 3 in Bastok or Windurst (you don’t necessarily have to be rank 3, just need to at least be on the rank 3 mission – The Three Kingdoms, in order to get access to the Chateau). You must also have completed the Growing Flowers quest, first. Head to the Queen Leaute’s grave, and examine it. Then talk to Chalvatot, who, if you have enough fame (LV 6+ fame in San`Doria, which is pretty high) will tell you he needs Derfland Humus for the queen’s garden. These drop off of Doom Scorpions who are tough LV 45-47 monsters found in the Crawler’s Nest. They have a special ability that can hit a LV ~45 in good armor for about 500-700 dmg. If you want the map (and lack the levels to kill the scorpion), the Derfland Humus sells at the auction house under Other > Misc. After returning the Humus you are given your reward: the map of the Northern Regions!

- Delkfutt’s Tower
Imasuke is located in Port Jeuno right by the entrance into Qufim Island. He asks for a Kaiser sword, which drops off of the Dancing Weapons in Qufim Island or can be bought at the auction house. Turning one in earns you your reward: The map of Delkfutt’s Tower! (includes all sections of Delkfutt’s Tower)

- Crawler’s Nest
Warning: This is a very long and somewhat annoying quest. This quest starts in Selbina. Talk to the Mayor of Selbina, Abelard, who tells you he wants you to find stone monuments, giving you a piece of clay. You must go out and find these monuments, trade the clay, then return to Selbina each time to obtain your reward, then be given a fresh piece of clay to find more monuments. There are a total of 17 monuments. Each monument will give you a certain gil value for the monument itself. Upon completing the 15th monument, you can choose to continue and get the last two clay monuments or just finish. Either way, you will be given a special reward for the 15th monument: the map of the Crawler’s Nest! Here are the locations of the monuments:

South Gustaberg – (K-10) – 800 gil reward
North Gustaberg – Cave by the waterfall NE of Dangruf Wadi – 3000 gil reward
Konschtat Highlands – (G-7) – 1000 gil reward
East Ronfaure – (G-11) – 800 gil reward
Jugner Forest – (H-12) – 1000 gil reward
Rolanberry Fields – (K-11) – 3000 gil reward
Batallia Downs – Must go to the south Batallia Island – 10000 gil reward
West Ronfaure – (I-10) – 800 gil reward
Valkurm Dunes – (E-9) – 1000 gil reward
Pashhow Marshlands – (F-6) – 1000 gil reward
La Theine Plateau – (J-7) – 1000 gil reward
Sauromogue Champagne – (I-9) [must go through Garlaige Citadel] – 10000 gil reward
Meriphataud Mountains – (J-10) – 1000 gil reward
Tahrongi Canyon – (E-5) – 1000 gil reward
West Sarutabaruta – (G-9) – 800 gil reward
East Sarutabaruta – (K-6) – 800 gil reward
Buburimu Penninsula – (J-5) – 1000 gil reward

- Raguemont Pass
This quest begins in Selbina. Thunder Hawk, who is found in front of the Mayor’s House, asks you to rescue two merchants who have been kidnapped by quadavs. You must now head over to Beadeaux. Kill De`Vyu Headhunter, who is a LV 45 NM, to get the quadav charm then head over to the third map of Beadeaux, and go to I-9. Make sure to be sneaking. Trade the charm with the door to get it to open. After the cut scene, return to Thunder Hawk in Selbina for your reward: 3000 gil and the map of Raguemont Pass!

- Touraimarai Canal

This quest starts in Mhaura. This is a difficult quest to get, simply because you must do many of the Rycharde the Cook quests before finally getting the quest for the map. Talk to the girl at ~ (I-8) in Mhaura on the first floor. She sends you to see the Mayor about work. The mayor then sends you back to her, who directs you to Rycharde the Cook. This begins a series of quests involving food that you must first do before getting this quest. Some of them involve a real hour wait period of about 8 hours inbetween them. However, once you get this quest itself, it is fairly simple. Rycharde gives you a pizza to deliver to Valgeir, who is in Selbina (simply ride the boat over). Deliver the pizza, return, and obtain your reward: the map of Touraimarai Canal!

Well, that’s it for the tutorial. I hope you never get lost again! Should you be interested in how to obtain any maps not listed here (I think I listed almost all of them…) send me a PM, and I’ll try to edit it into the guide.

Not content to rest until each and every adventurer in Vana’diel is sending a steady stream of gil into their already ample coffers, Goldagrik…

Level 30-75 Cheap and Fast (FFXI ige)

With todays prices and todays newbs, getting to 75 can be tough. So me and 5 friends decided to beat the system.

Here is what this exploit requires…
1 level 30 job
5 friends to act as a static group
1 CoP expansion pack
Your limit break quests need to be done if you want to go all the way
Also you should have the quest part done to be able to enter the Promyvions.

Alrighty then, here is what we did. It was quite simple actually, we formed a gorup of all of us level 30…
Pld/War
Smn/Blm
Whm/Smn
Brd/Whm
Drk/Thf (me)
Blm/Smn

What we did is we all went into Promyvion Holla, went up to the 3rd floor where all the mobs are IT and VT. We found a nice little corner, and just started pulling. We managed 9 levels in the first week, and we would all just log out where we were and log back in when we decided to get together and level some more. The nice thing about this is that we were all still lvl 30 in there, but with the cap gone we were leveling up, so that means we wouldnt have to buy lvl 40 armor/weapons, lvl 50 armor/weapons, lvl 60 armor/weapons and waste cash like everyone else. The mobs still gave us good xp, and some of the drops werent so bad either. So we beat the system and got to 75 a few days ago, and I thought id share it with you. We are now helping eachother out with our AF quests since we never bothered with them. It was nice though, being able to level up without being judged by what gear we had on and having to spend 1mil+ to buy some gloves that would be the only way to get a party invite.

Onyx explained how to save your homepoint anywhere in the zone you want this includes a way to save it in the zone spot to your mog house so you when you warp you immediately log into your house.

Type a name for the zoning point for you house into POS. As you are zoning into your house, click save. Then go into your house and change your main job, and then zone back out. As soon as you first see your health bar click the ‘goto’ on the button for you zone to your mog house and wait for the game to ask you if you want to save your homepoint. Save it and your warp is now set to your house.

Introduction:
As people continue to ignore many of the elements, and factors FFXi wields for a realistic and heavily enriched game play it becomes a priority to better aware them of this. To begin with, this tutorial has been designed to address the simple issues, as-well as targets audience who have no basic knowledge of the major benifits they may take advantage of through their mog house.

Choose Furniture:
Basically each piece of furniture increases your storage amount by a specific amount of slots (indicated by the "<STG:#>". Each piece of furniture is also encharged with its own element. These elements are basically the most important part of every piece of furniture. A person who is obsessed with synthesis may notice that it is of his best interest to buy furniture enfused with lightning elemental. Doing so would increase the chances of a sucessful de-synth.

Gardening:
Gardening is also another benifit provided by your mog house. As many people continue to whine, nag, and cry about the difficutly of making gil, they do not understand that they make millions while having the pleasure of sitting at home, their mog house. All they must do is purchase the required materials planting a sappling and feeding it a crystal each 7 days while examining it once or twice per day. It is best to have a mule stocked up with plants, making it easier for you to examine your plants on a daily bases without the need to walk all the way back to the city in the case you are in a hurry. (a complete article about gardening is available in the FFXI section) Dont forget like most of the gil making methods, you will need an amount of gil to start with.

Mog Safe Quests:
As you break your way through the wonderous achievements you accomplish while climbing the ladder of the game, you are faced with the all known problem of storage. There are many quests that allow you to increase your storage capacity, they are listed below:

* GobbieBag I (35-40 Charecter inventory slots)
* GobbieBag II (40-45 Charecter inventory slots)
* GobbieBag III (45-50 Charecter inventory slots)
* GobbieBag IV (50-55 Charecter inventory slots)
* GobbieBag V (55-60 Charecter inventory slots)
* Moogle’s Kind Master I (50-60 Mog safe slots)
* Moogle’s Kind Master II (60-70 Mog safe slots)
* Moggle’s Kind Master III (70-80 Mog safe slots)

Coffer Keys & Other Rare/Ex:
Many people with several jobs tend to have the problem of havig many beastman/kindred seals, or several coffer keys they dont wish to drop. The best storage solution for both those items would be to purchase a piece of furniture with a high storage capacity allowing you to store these items in a safe place until you require them in the future. (note that your storage, unlike your mog safe, requires you to be at your nation, it does not work in a rented mog house)

Storage NPC & AF:
As alot of gamers attained the 75mark for several jobs, it has become a pain to store Artifact armor, that is why the new AF NPC has been introduced, allowing you to store a set of a armor (5 pieces max per set, head, hands, body, legs, and feet) for a fee. People who have dropped AF before this system was introduced may retrieve the lost AF pieces, but require to start the AF quests for the specific job from scratch (meaning all pieces must be dropped, and player must start with AF1, the job weapon).

Upcoming articles:
This is only a quick FAQ to some things people dont notice about mog houses. Hopefully in the near future when time is abundant on my schedule i hope to engage in the following:

* Smn 1 on 1 (discussing mp, and surface related smn issues)
* Ranger (dicussing how to achieve optimum damage, and ws mods)
* Samurai (discussing samurai macros, and how to get the best out of your samurai)
* Basics of shadow tanking (duhhh)

Normally when a White Mage teleports another player you and the other player are both teleported. What if you could stay and keep inviting more people? Eliminate the need to zone, twice and even eliminate the need to use Warp, Saving even more MP. And we all no MP is money.
-The trick is to get the White Mage job to an appropriate level to use teleport spells,WITHOUT GETTING ANY OF THE CRAG CRYSTALS.
The most practical method is simply to make a mule and level it up to 36-42 White Mage. and park it in Lower Jeuno outside you’re Mog House.
When you do run out of MP, Zone into, and back out of you’re Mog House. Full MP again
-I say this is most practical because most people reading this have already grabbed those Crag Crystals. Its not too much work to level the easiest levelling job in the gameto 36-42. Especially when your mule starts to make more money than you do

-No more missed teleports while you are away.

-Less downtime due to not having to Warp back.

-I have seen my Teleport profits increase from 100k a day to 400k a day

I’ve scanned the November issues of PSM3 and PlayTM UK which have small snippets on FFXIII.
PSM3 have done a preview which digs into the story a little bit more, wheras PlayTM have done a Q&A with FFXIII Producer Yoshinori Kitase and Director, Motomu Toriyama on the characters and gameplay aspects of the title.
