I’ve only seen 1 Tanner’s guide out and while it is VERY good, there were some things that I personally changed to make my run to 100 a little easier on myself. So I’m passing along my experience and information to everyone else.

Before we get to the guide, let’s go over a couple of pre-guide info.

I’m from Fenrir, so ALL of these prices will be from Fenrir’s economy. Your server may be different for you. That being said, the way I’m laying out here may not be the best way for you to go. Don’t be afraid to check AH prices of everything you could make and what the materials cost. Also, don’t be scared to experiment, if I had done so before reaching a certain point, I could have saved myself over 100k.

Note about other Tanners : These guys are either your best friend (by supplying you with much needed leather, or other items for you to upgrade), or your worst enemy. Coeurl Hides on my server were going for 1,800 for me until someone else joined in and started buying them. Suddenly 3 others came in for the action and now they are 2,500 each! With the rate they sell at, they could easily go for 3,000. It’s pretty sad because some people are willing to pay ANY price so long as they get somewhere faster than everyone else. When you see something like this, it’s best to be patient and wait for them to get done buying that item. Then wait another week while the price falls back to original or maybe a bit lower from having a week of no sales.

Rank up items

8-10 = Rabbit Mantle
18-20 = Lizard Cesti
28-30 = Dhalmel Mantle
38-40 = Magic Belt
48-50 = Cuir Bouilli
58-60 = Raptor Jerkin
68-70 = Battle Boots
78-80 = Tiger Gloves
88-90 = Coeurl Mask

Prices to note:

Windurst Tea Leaves = 18 gil per. Buy them from the Taru near the gate to West Sauraburata in Windurst Waters.

Distilled water = 10 gil per. Most any shop that sells these you can get a good deal on. Every once in a while you may be able to get them for 9 gil per at the Tanner’s Guild.

Crystals = I’m not pricing out crystals; they are too different on every server.

Now, on to the guide! :)

———————————————————-

0 - 2 = Sheep Leather (Dark + Sheepskin + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves)

Post Patch, Sheep Leather has gotten crazy. It will be 12k in Windy, and anywhere from 8k - 11k in Sandy. Sheepskins have surely taken a jump in price as well, try to get these from the guild, they will cost only 144, and 12 new skins are stocked every day.

2 - 7 = Rabbit Hide (Earth + Rabbit Hide x5 + Grass Thread)

Rabbit Hide x12 = 1,000
Grass Thread x12 = 1,200

These are about the same price to make as Leather Bandana. I have this one here as your Sheep Leather is better used somewhere else. AH for about 400, or NPC them for 44 per. I NPC’d them.

7 - 11 = Solea (Wind + Sheep Leather x2)

These NPC back for ~90 gil. Not positive as it was so long ago. Someone I know suggested selling these in Windy as they sell fairly quick, I can’t vouch for how well they will on your Server. I NPC’d these.

11 - 17 = Lizard Cesti (Earth + Cesti + Lizard Skin)

Cesti = 136 gil each (NPC in South Sandy)
Lizard Skin x12 = 6,000 - 7,000

Very Easy, AH these suckers in Sandy. If you’re lucky, someone will be on the Himantes stage of raising Leathercraft. In fact, before you venture into this, try to find someone making Ram Mantles, and make a deal with them for their next stage.

17 - 21 = Dhalmel Leather (Dark + Dhalmel Hide + Dis. Water + Win. Tea)

Another Post Patch Wonder item. Dhalmel Hides/Leather sky rocketed in price suddenly. Be patient and get the hides as cheap as you can, sell the Leather on AH for a small profit. /joy! /lick

21 - 24 = Dhalmel Mantle (Ice + Dhalmel Hide + Wool Thread)

Wool Thread x12 = 20,000

These actually max at level 27; however, it’s best to just use this as a stepping stone into Parchment. If your patient, AH these, or Mule them, they WILL come up as Guild Point items later. NOTE: I skipped over this item. I simply add it here if you HATE failures. I went straight to Parchment from Dhalmel Leather, and I would do it again.

24 - 29 = Parchment (Dark + Sheep Leather + Rolanberry)

Rolanberry = 120 per in Port Jeuno, opposite Choco Stables

Again, stepping stone to another item. This caps at 31. Sell Parchments in stacks in Sandoria, and the leftover stragglers individually in Jeuno (for soon-to-be Bards). Break even on my server.

29 - 36 = Ram Leather (Dark + Ram Skin + Dis. Water + Win. Tea)

Fun synth, any Ram hunters should get their Leathercraft to this point just so they can stack the skins they get into leather. Ram Skin is a small profit on AH, but save for future recipes.

36 - 39 = Wolf Gorget (Earth + Wolf Hide + Cotton Thread)

Cotton Thread x12 = ??? guess: 5,000

These WILL be a loss. No one wants these. Just NPC them and eat the loses. Get used to it if your taking this to 100. With the recent prices of cotton, might be best to just go straight to Waistbelts.

39 - 43 = Waistbelt (Wind + Ram Leather x2 + Grass Thread)

You can AH these if your patient enough, and you even get a small profit. I don’t see any use for these rather than making Corsettes. Post patch, they are involved in a synth for Haste Belts as well. You can also NPC these for a good loss (which I did /cry)

43 - 49 = Ram Mantle (Ice + Ram Skin + Wool Thread)

Huge Loss: NPC them. Go home and cry to your Moogle so no one else will see you.

49 - 52 = Himantes (Earth + Raptor Skin + Lizard Cesti)

Raptor Skin x1 = 1,000
Raptor Skin x12 = 15,000 - 20,000

Remember when you made Lizard Cesti? Here’s to hoping someone is on that stage when you start this, if not, prepare to make your own. Sell back = crap!

52 - 61 = Tiger Leather (Dark + Tiger Hide + Dis. Water + Win. Tea)

Skill ups start to get slow here, you’ll be doing this for a while. I started this at 50. My basic reasoning was I was already losing 1k+ on Himantes (per synth), the total synth for this Leather is 1k, so nothing is changing, I’m just getting more Leather in the long run (You’ll need it!). Save the leather, even if you have 20+ stacks, mule it, or Storage it. If you don’t plan to go any further in Tanning, just AH them.

61 - 63 = Beak Mantle (Earth + Cockatrice Skin x2 + Grass Thread)

Thingyatrice Skins = 800 - 1,000 each

Stepping stone to Beak Jerkin. I don’t remember what the NPC is, so I can’t speak for how bad the losses are.

63 - 69 = Beak Jerkin (Earth + Sheep Leather + Cockatrice Skin x2)

Pretty decent here. You will take a loss (with failures and all). Break even if your not counting the sheep Leather, whatever that costs is what you will end up losing.

69 - 71 = Coeurl Leather (Dark + Coeurl Hide + Dis. Water + Win. Tea)

Coeurl Hides = 1,800 - 2,500 each

The Hides are a pretty rare drop. Be patient and get your levels with this leather, because you will need a lot of the leather later if you plan to keep going in Leathercraft.

71 - 75 = Tiger Mantle (Ice + Tiger Hide + Wool Thread)

Stepping stone. I would probably do these till about 73 or 74. Mix and match these with Tiger Jerkin. I went straight Tiger Jerkin from 71 - 79, but I also ran out of leather 1/2 way through and had to buy the rest.

75 - 79 = Tiger Jerkin (Earth + Sheep Leather + Tiger Leather x2)

Loss will again be in the Sheep Leather. I got 2 HQs while leveling this and that seems to offset the cost of making these.

79 - 80 = Manticore Leather (Dark + Manticore Hide + Dis. Water + Win. Tea)

Manticore Hide = 1,500 each

Save the leather for GP item days when you will need to use it.

80 - 85 = Coeurl Mantle (Ice + Coeurl Hide + Wool Thread)

Sell to NPC, decent loss here.

85 - 87 = Coeurl Mask (Earth + Coeurl Leather x2 + Faceguard)

This is something I wish I had done when I leveled Leathercraft. You get 3500 guild points for these, so the sell back would probably be around ~3600. Faceguards are only about 400 gil each from the AH.

87 - 89 = Coeurl Jerkin (Earth + Sheep Leather + Coeurl Leather x2)

From 85-89, between this item and Guild Points, I blew through 600k total through all of my characters. Not all of them were from this synth, but a lot of it was. 2k+ loss per synth, and very slow leveling. You will throw a party when you hit 89, only to wish you could go back once you see what you have to make tomorrow.

——————————–
This is where I am currently. Everything from here on is speculation. I’m probably going to be 89 for a long time until I can accept the fact that I’m going to lose MILLIONS just for 1 level up.
——————————–

89 - 90 = Ogre Mask (Earth + Manticore Leather + Coeurl Mask)

Fairly cost effective. NPC of Coeurl Mask sells for about ~3600, so I would expect this to be about ~4500. If this is the case, you will end up only losing about 2-3k per synth. I’m crossing my fingers for this one.

90 - 95 = Tiger Mask (Ice + Wool Thread + Wyvern Skin + Ram Leather + Tiger Hide x2)

Wyvern Skin = 15,000 each

OUCH! The most cost effective way to level up here though. Each synth you will lose at the least 5k on just the wyvern skin. That’s if you AH the item as well. Very slow leveling process here.

*Pending* 95 - 97 = Griffon Leather (Dark + Griffon Hide + Dis. Water + win. Tea)

Griffon Hide = Unknown

Ignore this recipe unless there is an item added later that make Griffon Leather decent or worthwhile. Also, depending on the price of the hide, the leather might be a good sell back to NPC for minimal loss.

95 - 100 = Panzer Mask (Ice + Wool Thread + Ram Leather + HQ Coeurl Hide x2 + Wyvern Skin)

HQ Coeurl Hides = 500 gil each

This is the final stretch. This is a great item, but since it’s the most practical to max out Leathercraft, it’s fairly cheap on the AH. Expect another huge loss (possibly even more than Tiger Mask). Also note, you will never see someone synth this until you are about level 60 in Leather, at that time you will see 5 different people making these. Don’t let it crush your hopes, there will always be high level crafters in all crafts, don’t let 5 of them discourage you.

———————————————————-

I hope this helps everyone and isn’t too similar to any other Leathercraft guides. This is my personal experience through this craft. Every stage that you level you will end up losing a lot of money. Make sure you have the money to start, and at the same time, make sure you have the money to keep it going. A level 60 craft isn’t that great unless it’s a sub skill. Make sure you know what you are getting into before you actually do it. If you get stuck on 60 with no gil, you’ll have hard time making it back since there are far more people with level 60 craft than level 70.

Good luck to everyone! :)

Ruo - Epic Dark Knight Tutorial (Ff11 Gil)

Welcome to Ruo’s first Epic Guide. Before I begin, I would like to state that this guide is property of MPS. All of the information is hand written, and no secondary sources were used. So if you find this guide on another site, claiming it as their own, remember, you found it here first.

Foreword
If you’re a bit experienced in FFXI, you’re probably aware and maybe even experienced in the main job and sub job combination system. Please keep in mind that I am using the sub job of a black mage. Why, some may ask? I am not a solo, brute, sword toting, mindless tank. I like a combination of magic and melee. Dark Knight and Black Mage combo gives you access to lots over black mage powers. Of these powers includes warp, which teleports the player to his or her home point. You also get escape which warps the player’s group outside of a dungeon and to safety. This sub job also gives good mana regeneration and MP pool.

Keep in mind that you do NOT have to pick black mage as sub job. Since this guide does not include what I did to level my previously main job (Black Mage), it should have no consequence. The ONLY difference is that you have to buy your spells as you level for Dark Knight (Which will now be named DK). No fear though, fellow adventurers, I will be commenting on all new spells I use throughout the course of this guide.

Prerequisites
You must be level 30 to attain the Dark Knight job. DK is considered an advanced profession, and a quest must be done to unlock it. With this in consideration I am assuming that you have a good pocket of Gil already saved up to quickly gear and advance your dear warlock. What you REALLY must have done is at least have done the Chocobo License quest and attained your sub job ability. For your sakes, I won’t make you search for either of these.

Sub Job Quest
You can either do this in Mhaura or Selbina. Since I’m assuming you started in Bastok (Since you love MPS and joined us on unicorn…) I will describe the Selbina quest version. To get there, you must go to South Gustenberg ? North Gustenberg from the WEST passage in south gustenberg ? Cross north gust to highlands ? cross into Valkurm Dunes. From there, you must cross over ½ the map to Selbina. I’m hoping you have a map or a guide to get you there, since describing exactly is too complicated. Speak to Isacio. He is the north-easternmost NPC in town, right next to the ocean. He will ask you to bring 3 things:
Damsel worm – Kill damselflies. They’re all around in the dunes
Magicked Skull – Go to J-6 in dunes at NIGHT. Kill ghouls till it drops
Crab Apron – Kill snippers. They’re also all around

Chocobo Quest
Before you begin, obtain 4 pieces of Gausebit Wildgrass. You can buy those in the AH if you’d like. When I did the quest they charged 1,000gil a pop. When you get that grass, head over to Jeuno. Upper Jeuno to be exact. Speak to Brutus in the Chocobo stables. It’s down some stairs in G-7. He’ll explain how Chocobos are mistreated and tell you a story. When all of that is done, Go over to the giant chicken next to the little girl. TRADE the chocobo a gausebit grass. It will refuse. You MUST repeat this FIVE more times each in-game day. A new day begins when the clock hits 0:00. On the 3rd day the Chocobo will start taking the grass. In the 6th day, after you feed it for the last time, a cut-scene will occur and you will get your license. Grats

The Path to Darkness
By now I am assuming you’re level 30, you have a giant chicken at your disposal, and you have 2 jobs at your beckon. Welcome to Dark Knight, I hope you enjoyed the guide. You can leave now. No I’m serious, it’s over, go. Ok, fine, guess they don’t make users as gullible as they used to be. Let’s get down to business. Arrive in bastok and bind wherever you feel like. But be sure to set your home point here. Go into bastok mines district. There is an area in the district (north east) that is an area of houses that are either on the first or second floor. Get up to the second floor, and cross the bride-like paths. One of the houses contains and NPC named Gumbah. Speak to him. WARNING: You may have to speak to him twice. The first time, he’ll speak about some Galka going in his reincarnation journey. The second he’ll speak about a dark knight. You’ll get a cut-scene and a musketeer will walk in and talk. When all is said and done, go to the Chocobo stables there in the mines district. You MUST have 1 spot open in your inventory. Ride a chicken through south gustenberg to north gust. Travel ALL THE WAY to the extreme north east stretch of land up there. That is where the Palborough mines are located. When you get inside, try to get to the third floor by any means necessary. Either take the elevator or look for ramps. No mob here will attack you except Old Quadavs who con as Easy Pray. When you arrive on the third floor, head over to quadrant H-8. It is an area with a river and a dock. Get on the only floating boat there, and pull the lever. In a few seconds the boat will move and you will load another area. A cut-scene will let you speak to the master dark knight and you will receive a Chaosbringer.

Now your task is to slaughter 100 enemies and harvest 100 souls. For myself, this task would take a while, since I was a black mage I had to switch to my level 1 warrior and kill stuff. No matter what level of a warrior you are, head outside into north gustenberg from the Bastok Port. Now, if you have a second computer, open up notepad and type the number one key 105 times. It should look like:

11111111111111111111111111111

Up to 105. Whenever you kill a mob you press delete once. Why, do you ask, 105 instead of 100? For insurance; you never know what mistake you may have made while counting, forcing you to return. Anyways, if you have no second computer, just get a piece of paper and write down one hundred and five ones. Then as you kill the mobs scratch one out for each soul. This is a nice opportunity to make a few crystals, so don’t hesitate to get a signet casted on you. Once you killed the 105 mobs, head back to town and take a chocobo to marshlands. Now, I must warn you. You MUST have killed 100 mobs. I accidentally killed about 97 or so, and had to go back, kill more, and then return once more. In the marshlands, head to the South East stretch of land. When you zone, one last cut-scene will occur. Congratulations, you’re not a dark knight.

The Beginning
The beginning levels start out easily. Because I have black mage as sub-job I start out with stone as a level 1 spell. Try to pick up bronze set of armor. Since I prefer the scythe over the great sword, I bought a Bronze Zaghnal. It has 14 damage, 480 delay, and can be used as a level 1 dark knight. Kill Giant Hornets, Tunnel Worms, and Ding Bats until level 4 in north gustenberg. After that, head over to the mines district, and venture inside the Zeruhn mines. Inside there you can kill pretty much every mob around (As long as you stay clear of the Korroloka Tunnel).

I’d like to thank the people in the linkshell for the gear donated. Anyways, I’m getting ahead of myself. Pick up Stone scroll at the local vendor. This is your first damage spell. When you reach level 6, you’ll be available to learn the spell “poison”. This is a DoT (Damage over Time) spell. It’s very useful against stronger mobs. Unfortunately it is generally a waste of mana if you know the fight won’t last long. Be sure to pick up this spell at the auction house or vendor. The next big development for the Dark Knight is when he reaches level 7. It’s time for an upgrade. The next set of armor looks sweet as heck. Try to pick up the leather armor set. Defense ranges from 2-7 and is a definite must. After you hit level seven it becomes kind of pointless to fight in the mines. So instead, head back to north gustenberg. From there, go on top of the zegham hill. There is sheep, goblins, bees, and worms up there. Very nice xp. Keep at it until you cap at level 10. By now, you should have harvested an insane amount of crystals. There reached a point where I couldn’t fit anymore in my inventory and I was forced to create a mule. Still, it’s a nice way to make money, because you’re about to need it.

Save up some cash and buy Scale Mail. You’ll be using it for a while and it’s a step up from leather. This armor includes:

Scale Mail - body – 11 defense
Faceguard – head – 5 defense
Scale cuisses – legs – 7 defense
Scale greaves – boots – 3 defense
I decided to pick up Legionnaire’s mittens instead of scale – 3 defense, +3 attack

Now, you may start to feel that zegham hill has become a bit teady. You are faced with a choice. Either head over to Palborough mines or stay on the hill. Either way your XP remains relatively the same. I personally chose to go to the mines. If you take my path, try to remain on the first floor of the mines. If you must, head to the second. No matter what you do, do NOT go to the third floor. You’ll be faced with onyx, greater, veteran, and even old quadavs. Those will kill you quickly. Keep at it until you hit 11.

Valkurm Dunes Guide (Npc FFXI)

Hey there, I recently started playing Final Fantasy 11 again. This strategy is primarily for San d’Orians and Bastokians for traveling convenience. If you want to use airship, boat, etc., then feelk free.

First off, get to Level 11. I accomplished this by first killing everything in West Ranfaure until level 6. Then Ghelsba til 9. Then la Thine Til 11. Now, take the long trek to Valkurm. On the way be careful of the hordes of Goblins.

There are two popular strategies:
1) Kill Lizards and Goblins near the entrance to Konchstat Highlands, or
2) Kill Snippers, Goblins, and Bats at the moderately camped areas (J-6)

First, I will go over #1. First off get into a party. 2 warriors, 2 whm, 1 monk, and 1 thf is a good combination. Now, find a camp. Look for a place away from aggressive spawns and try to get it near a corner. First you will need a puller. This player will find a reasonable spawn, bring it back to the camp, and let everyone else just wait. Then you will need a tank and a backup tank. Thats what the WARs are for in this strategy. PLDs also work very well. The tank will provoke the creature the puller lured to the base. The tank will also be responsible for holding the creature off the healers i.e. provoking them if the healers get aggroed. The backup will provoke the creature if the tanks health gets too low( around under 80 is a good time to voke it). Now the WHM should stand in the back and heal the tank when its health gets low. This are gives an average 130 xp per battle depending on the difficulty of the creatures.

For the second strategy, you will need a BLM. The BLM should cast fire, as the snippers( the main source of xp) are weak against it. Snippers have extremely high defense and can also cast Defense Boost. You will notice you may be hitting 0 damage. Don’t worry, it wont last. Use the same pulling-tanking strategy as in part one for this.

This is a very easy and useful strategy to level. The exp is very good, the only problem is the slight risk of death. If someone in the group is being incompetent, the whole group could collapse. i.e backups not vokin and causing your regular tank to die or puller luring extremely strong targets. So be careful who you group with. I recommend setting your HP in Selbina or near the entrance to Konchstat. This is an excellent technique.

1.1 Introduction to Crafting

This tutorial assumes that you may be completely new to FFXI, so let me begin by explaining the system of crafting. Crafting is a method of creating objects by means of synthesis – you ‘use’ a crystal, then you are prompted to provide ingredients with which to synthesize. Depending on the crystal you use and the ingredients you provide, your character will attempt to synthesize a certain item. If you attempt recipes that do not actually exist, it will tell you so and will not attempt to craft anything – so you are not at risk of losing anything by trying a non-existent recipe. Your ability to craft the item depends mainly on your current skill level in that particular crafting guild (other factors will be examined throughout the tutorial – mainly in section 4.0). There are a total of 8 crafting guilds in the game: Blacksmithing (also known as ‘Smithing’), Goldsmithing, Carpentry (aka Woodworking), Boneworking, Alchemy, Tanners (aka Leathercrafting), Weaving (aka Clothcrafting), and Cullinary (aka cooking). There is also a 9th guild, fishing, but that does not involve crafting or synthesis – but rather just fishing, which is a different topic altogether so it isn’t necessary that we examine it in this tutorial. It should also be noted that some crafting recipes require skills in two or three guilds – for example when making a Claymore. It requires a certain amount of Smithing, Leatherworking, and Woodworking skill in order to make.

1.2 Crafting Recipe Lists

Several sights have good crafting recipe lists. Refer to the following links for lists of existing recipes and the crafting skill you should be at to have reasonable chances of creating the item. Some of the listing even include a range, for example it may list a recipe and in brackets it’ll show (6-10). What this means is that you can start making this item with a good success rate once you crafting skill level is 6, and making this item will lead to skill improvements until your skill level reaches 10. Skill levels will be explained more in section 2.0.

http://www.killingifrit.com/list.php?c=guilds

Some listings have certain recipes that others don’t, although most of these lists are pretty complete. It’s still nice to verify multiple lists though J

1.3 Note on High-Quality and Upgrade Items

When crafting, it is sometimes possible to obtain high quality items, which will often show up as a + 1 type item, for example a Bee Spatha + 1. This occurs for a number of reasons which will be covered in section 4.0, but luck is definitely a factor. The recipe does not differ at all to obtain these items. Additionally, high quality items can possibly have slightly different names, for example a flame sword is a high quality fire sword. High quality items have better attributes and/or effects than the regular item, and are worth more gil. Upgrade items are a different story. Upgrade items occur when you take an item as part of your crafting recipe, and upgrade it into a different item. These have specific recipes and can be replicated provided you have the necessary skill level. This includes items you see around such as San’Dorian boots, or Bastokan Knuckles, or Windurstian cloaks. These items involve crafting with a conquest point item, and turning it into something else. When you see ‘Federation’ items, those are high-quality upgrade items. So may be you were creating a pair of San’Dorian boots but got lucky, and out came a pair of Federation boots! As with other high quality items, these are generally better. The recipe listings are still somewhat unknown to a large portion of the NA community, but some primitive listings such as this one have been developed:

http://www.ihtu.com/~iurbina/ffxi/conquest/items/hqcq%20translation%20notes.txt
Other found listings and recipes will be edited into the tutorial as they are found.

2.0 Approaches to Crafting

When you create a character, all of your crafting skills start at 0. There are also a set of rankings, going from: Amateur (0-10), Recruit (10-20), Initiate (20-30), Novice (30-40), and also rankings from 40-50, 50-60, 60-70, 80-90, and 90-100, all of the names of which I’ll refrain from naming for the sake of space and clarity. As you attempt to synthesize an item within your skill range, there are three possible outcomes: You synthesize the item correctly, the synthesis fails (losing at least the crystal, and potentially any number of the ingredients used in the recipes), or you obtain a high quality synthesis, which were introduced in section 1.3. Sometimes high quality synthesis can include getting a larger number of the item, for example getting 66 shurikens (throwing weapon) instead of 33 from the recipe. At the same time, if the item is in the appropriate skill range, your skill will go up by a factor of 0.1 most commonly, but 0.2 skill increases are still common, and the 0.3 skill increases are rare. If you attempt to synthesize items to easy for your skill level, your skill will no longer improve – although you can still make the item. If it is too high of a skill level, you will constantly fail losing most of the ingredients involved. You do not need to be a part of the guild to begin to increase your skill level in that guild, and there is no limit to the number of guilds you can be a part of. However, your ability to improve your skill is capped every 10 levels, at which point you must join the guild in order to increase your skill any further. You will then be tested by the Guildmaster for that particular guild. He will ask for a certain item and once the item demanded is traded to him he will promote you to the next skill level, for example he will promote you from Amateur to Recruit, uncapping your skill level until 20. You should know that you can take these tests as early as #8 of that skill level. So you can be promoted as early as skill level 8 to recruit from amateur, and as early as level 18 to initiate. Important tips for increasing the success rate of your crafting will be looked at in section 4.0. The location of the guilds can be found at: http://ffxi.stratics.com/content/info/crafting/crafting-intro.php and just about anywhere else. Next, we will examine the two most basic approaches to crafting: Low-cost and high output.

2.1 The Low-Cost Approach

The key to the low-cost approach is through the use of NPC (Non-Playable Character) vendors scattered across the world. The cost of the ingredients necessary to craft are generally more expensive at the Auction House than at the NPC vendors for three reasons: first, many people are unaware of the various item locations from vendors, second, people are willing to pay simply out of convenience, and finally many items are sold by guild shops, which have limited amount of inventory at the start of each game day that they open. Players looking to make profit will camp that NPC vendor until the start of the next day and try to buy out that ingredient as much as possible then make profit by selling it at the AH. Of course, only guild shops will run out of supply. There are vendors scattered all over that will sell you items cheaper, so for this approach it is strongly suggested that you have at least two mules located in the two cities that you did not start at, and your main character in your home town. Generally there are stores such as grocery and general stores that sell the same items as guild shops in the various towns, as well as the less popular guild shops set up in port towns such as Mhaura and Selbina. A growing item database is Allakhazam’s, which has a search function. http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/search.html]<a href="http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/search.html" target="_blank">http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/search.html</a> . Although it is far from complete, it is still very handy at tracking down vendors that sell the items you need for crafting. Another way of going about reduced costs is by making the least costly item to increase your skill. Considerations for this are the materials and the amount used in each recipe, and the crystal (you’re better off using an earth crystal recipe than a fire crystal recipe, because of how much cheaper earth crystals are). A third way of reducing costs is by chaining crafting. What I mean by this is producing other things from your products. An example of this would be using yagudo necklaces to create grass threads to get your skill level from 0-3 in clothweaving, and then using those grass threads you have to get your skill from 3-4 to produce grass clothes, then using leftover grass threads and the grass cloths to create capes from 4-10.

2.2 The High Output Approach

This mostly applies to higher and mid-range crafting items. As you begin to craft, you’ll notice that some things sell for significantly more than the price of the items require. Examples that I’m particularly familiar with are things like Insect Balls, which are only a LV 24 cooking skill item, and require an earth crystal(30 gil) + little worm (3) + distilled water (10) + Millioncorn (44) = 89 gil. Yet, they sell commonly for 300-400 gil a piece, at about 300%+ the cost of the materials. Although the profit isn’t large in terms of gil, it is still a good idea to craft these while increasing your skill to make a profit while you’re at it. Other mid-range items include meat mithkabobs (if you can get your hands on the ingredients for a fair price). These are just two examples of the many items which sell for a noticeable amount more than they cost. Another consideration is the price the item sells for at NPC vendors, which will be examined more in the next section.

3.0 Getting Rid of Your Product

There are several strategies for getting rid of the items you produce. One of them is the Auction House, which to maximize efficiency you must use multiple characters or mules – since you can only sell up to 7 items at the auction house at a time. Even with multiple characters, this can be tedious and the amount of items you produce prove to be simply too much. Luckily there is the bazaar to consider. If you have no problem with leaving your computer on overnight, then simply head over to Jeuno, put the items in your bazaar, and have a nice sleep. Why Jeuno you ask? Because the auction house there has a large amount of tax, about 110 for single items and 500 for stacks of 12, whereas your bazaar only has a 10% tax. So often, low cost items sell cheaper in your bazaar than at auction house because of the bazaar tax vs. the AH tax. If you want to sell higher priced items via bazaar, you’re probably better off in one of the main cities where there is no tax. However, if you’re the kind of evil macro user that I am and enjoy to reel in profit by fishing overnight, you should consider the third option. This third and definitely the most convenient way of dealing with items you produce is by selling them to NPC vendors. The selling of goods works in two ways in FFXI. If you try to sell the item to a guild shop, they will offer it a price at a fraction of the price it sells for there, and since the price goes up as more people buy items at a guild shop, you make the most by selling these items to guild shops. However, these guild shops have a limited amount that they will accept before saying their inventory is full for the day. Other shops, such as magic shops, will buy any item you have in your inventory for a slightly lower price than a guild shop will ever offer but have no limit to the amount they will buy. You can use this as a consideration in getting rid of your product. Items that have been heavily devalued (especially low level crafting items) sell easily and at almost the same price to NPC vendors. An example of how selling to NPC vendors can work to your benefit is shown in the cooking example in section 5.0.

4.0 Tips for Crafting: When to Craft

There are a number of different factors that effect how successful your synthesizing is, most obviously of which is your skill level. Successful crafting occurs reasonable if you are within at least 4 of the minimal crafting skill demanded. If you have a much higher skill level than that demanded for the creation of the item, then you are also much more likely to obtain a high quality item. Another factor is something called Advanced Image Synthesis Support, which increases the chance of successfully crafting items. It is strongly, strongly, strongly suggested that you get this every time you start crafting, and not only that but one of the 3 NPCs per guild that offer this service, offers a stronger version of which you have to pay gil for. The amount you have to pay is equal to 30 * the level of your crafting. So as an amateur from 0-10 you will pay 30 gil for that support, and from 10-20 you will pay 60 gil. This lasts a lot longer than the other synthesis support and is a lot more effective. It is without a doubt worth it since when you consider crystals cost from 30-350 gil each, and every failed synthesis will result in loss of a crystal AND potentially ingredients – one prevented failure and you already make your gil back! Less obvious is the day on which you craft. To understand this, you must understand which elements are weak to which. This will be explained using a single arrow to show dominance, so fire -> ice means that fire will defeat ice.
Water -> Fire -> Ice -> Wind -> Earth -> Thunder -> Water (as you can see, we’re back with water). Light and Dark both oppose each other and are separate from this loop.
Each in-game day has a name and a property corresponding to that name, for example Firesday has a red moon and is considered to have Fire-based attributes that day. Here is the list of the order of in-game days:
Firesday -> Earthsday -> Watersday -> Windsday -> Icesday -> Thundersday -> Lightsday -> Darksday -> (end of the week, start over with Firesday).

Now, here are the statistics concerning when it is best to craft from several high level crafting JPN players on Diabolos server who linked me to several sites. These are the relative crafting bonuses for the day you craft on:

the day before: 26%
the same day as the crystal used: 10%
the conquering elemental day: 18%
any other day: average 9%

This is all related to the type of crystal you use. What this tells you for example is, say you are crafting with a Fire Crystal. You are then concerned about Firesday. The day before (darksday) you have a 26% bonus. The same day (Firesday) you have a mere 10% bonus, and the conquering elemental day(watersday) you have an 18% bonus. Every other day you have approximately a 9% bonus. This is perhaps why people think your crafting isn’t as great with fire crystals on iceday – because iceday only has the lowest bonus of 9% (since ice is in fact not the conquering element for fire, water is. Fire is the one that is more powerful than ice). Although these figures are not perfect, I have been told that they are a fair representation.

A final consideration is the moon stage. Every full moon and every new moon, crafting (along with fishing and mining and many other things) receives a partial additional bonus to success rates. I have heard a full moon is even better than a new moon for crafting. Both a full moon and a new moon last just about 7 hours real time, which is about 7 in-game days which is nearly an in-game week (which is 8 days, or 8 hours real-life time). When these moon cycles occur can be seen in the Virtual Vanadiel Timer at http://www.manakun.com/hari/ . So, if you wanted the best possible chance of crafting a fire crystal item, you should craft on the darksday when the full moon is out while also having the most powerful advanced image synthesis support (not to mention the highest skill level possible ;)) .

4.1 Tips For Crafting: The Secret of Decomposition

Decomposition is the word associated with the Lightning Crystal (the same element that is often referred to as thunder). It is sensible when considering crafting certain items, for example when synthesizing Linen Thread, you use a Lightning Crystal to ‘decompose’ two Flax Flowers. But, there is actually something of a secret associated with the lightning crystal. Certain recipes can be ‘decomposed’ into the ingredients used to create it. The exact listing of all of the items I do not have, but I do know that you must have a skill of at least high enough to make the item in order to be successful with the decomposition. An example of how this would be useful is with the Leather Bandana, a low skill and very cheap Leathercrafting item. Since they also drop off of orcs, they sell especially cheap in San’Doria: about 100-200 gil. But with a lightning crystal (about 100 gil cost) and a Leather Banadana -> you can decompose it to receive anywhere from 1, 2, or 3 squares of Sheep Leather. And Sheep Leather sells for about 500 gil from the AH! That’s anywhere from 300-1300 gil profit from an easily obtainable item. As people find more and more items which you can decompose, you should simply post a reply to this tutorial and help us make a nice list .

5.0 A Quick Crafting Example: Cooking 0-30

Here are some examples of how to improve your cooking skill in a day from 0-30. This method is cost efficient but also kind of cheats in the sense that it crafts certain items out of it’s range for convenience. This is why you should take a look at section 4.0 before you attempt to craft and ALWAYS remember to use the high quality advanced image synthesis support.

0-3: Water Crystal + 4 San’Dorian Carrots = 4 Carrot Broths. Water crystals cost 300 per stack, or 25 gil each. Carrots cost very little in any of the San’Dorian shopsVendors that sell them (again use http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/search.html to easily find the locations of items). Each stack of 12 carrot broths sold (although slowly) on my mules for about 450-500 gil a piece. The loss of gil is minimal (if not profitable).

3-11: Wind Crystal + Bastore Sardine = 2 Sliced Sardine. The Bastore Sardine can be bought for about 54 gil at the fishing guild shop. The Wind Crystals cost about 1.1k per stack, or less than 100 gil each. The Sliced Sardines sell for about 64 gil each at the fishing guild shop and you produce 2 per recipe. Since your failure is noticeable from 3-6, adv. Image synthesis support is definitely suggested. The loss is extremely minimal, about 15 gil per successful craft.

11-20: Ice Crystal + Rock Salt + Selbina Milk = 4 sticks of Selbina Butter. The selbina milk costs about 40 gil at vendors in Selbina and SanDoria, although noticeably more at the Guild Shop in Windurst. Rock Salt costs about 10 gil each in Sandoria, and ice crystals sell for about 1.2k a stack. However, this only produces 4 sticks of Selbina butter, which sell questionably well on AH and not overly well to the vendors. At this level you will experience your largest loss in gil, although it’s still neglectible compared to other crafts.

20-26(optional to 28ish): Earth Crystal + Little Worm + Distilled Water + Millioncorn = 12 Insect Balls. The Earth crystals are valued at 25 gil each (300 for 12), Little Worms sell constantly for 3 gil each at the Catalyst shop in Windurst Waters, and the tavern there also sells distilled water for 10 gil each – both are unending supply and don’t change price. The Millioncorn is subject to price change so is best bought in SanDoria. You make about 300% profit from selling this recipe, so no loss should be involved, even profit should be expected.

26-30: Water Crystal + 2 Kazham Pineapples: If you buy the Kazham pineapples in Kazham or other vendors you will save a lot of gil, and pineapple juice will again sell for more than it costs. You could passively make this up as you level, making juice for your mages if you’re not keen on power-levelling your cooking skill. Minimal loss or profit should be expected.

30+: There are many possible ways of going about raising past 30, but since I have not yet done it I can’t offer solid advice. But the big monster meat mithkabobs can be made as early as 30, although I hear it’s safest not to make them until 35ish – since they’re so costly to make a failed synthesis can hurt.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this crafting guide. If there’s anything you disagree with, or any simple corrections you want made, simply PM me or add a reply to this thread. I’ll probably edit / tweak out the tutorial, in particular the cooking example as I level it up further. Feel free to PM me known decomposition recipes and I’ll compile a list and add it to the tutorial.

Seven Easy Steps For Making Cash! (FFXI skill)

THIS SUBMISSION WAS FEATURED "ELITE" IN AN MPS QUEST!

Seven easy steps for making cash!
Selling Items at Auction House

1) Fire Crystals and Dark Crystals are the most needed items in FFXI check the auction house to see their current sell price.

2) The first method to make greats amount of Gil is to buy spells at the mage shop and sell them at the auction house for easy 1k+ profits each time. Best way is to check prices of spells in the auction house and write them down. After that simply go to the mage shop and compare the spells to see which ones will give you the most money.

3) This is the most profitable and easiest way to make money in FFXI.
1) Go a city and find Armors, Swords, Rings, and Shields that are rare and for sell.
2) Write down the prices of those items.
3) Travel to the 3 other cities and see the prices of those items for sell.
4) Now on average item prices vary Greatly from one town to another.
5) You can make up to 30k from a single trip.
6) Usually its best to see the random items the 3 starter towns have and compare them to the Jueno auction house.
7) When you are a high enough player you can use a airship to quickly travel from each town.
I have made 200k or more per house doing this.

Hunting Monsters and Selling in Auction House

1) Go to the Valkrum Dunes and kill goblins. Goblins drop rare pieces of goblin armor. They sell for about 500 Gil each piece in the auction house. Run a hunting macro to kill enough goblins to get yourself a full pack of them. Then just place them in the auction house and go kill more goblins. This should make you on average 15k an hour.

2) At West Rom outside Sandoria you can kill lots of sheep. They drop sheep skins that sell for about 500 Gil each. You once again just follow the same method as goblin armor and make once again about 15k per hour.

3) At East Sarabatuba near Windrush you can hunt crawlers for silk. Their silk sells for about 1k Gil each. With the same monster hunting and auction house methods you can make about 15-30k an hour with them.

Brand New Players to make 100k Gil per hour

Requirements:
You MUST, MUST have 2 characters. Not 2 accounts, 2 character slots with 2 characters on the same server. Bastok only.

Step 1:
1 of your characters must have about 1k gil available. The more the better. 10k is preffered to do a smooth day-cut.

Get your high level character to Fedex 1-10k gil to your alt. To fedex the money send it through an NPC named Belizieg in front of the markets auction house

With that money, complete these quests:
The Quadav’s Curse
A Flash in the Pan
Mom, the Adventurer?
The Wisdom of the Elders
Groceries
The Bare Bones
Minesweeper
Buckets of Gold
Brygid, the stylist
A Lady’s heart.

Also, make your alt a red mage. It’ll help to do the brygid quest.
To learn how to do these quests, go to
1. Click here

Doing all of these quests takes 1 or so hours. Once you do that, go to the metal works. Speak to unlucky rat, trade him slimy oil He’ll give you a warp scroll

Part 2:
Go to the AH, and put up the warp scroll for sale. It’ll sell from 10k-15k depending on the auction house.

10×10=100k. This will require 10 characters and 10 hours. It’s 2x faster with dual accounts. It may seem like a lot, but some people can’t make that much in 2 weeks.

Good luck. Remember, ALL items for the quests can be found in AH.

Monsters to Kill and Sell loot to special NPC’s

1) The following monsters can be killed over and over again as well as their special items can be sold at the auction house:

Item to Sell
Items needed to Make
Price item sells
Location of Created Item’s Buyer
Creatures that Drop Needed Items
Legata
4 flint stones
100 gil
Southern San D’Oria in Lion Springs Tavern

————————————————————-

Unlocking Ninja - Unlocking Ninja is a fairly long process, lots of running back and forth between a warehouse, house, Norg, and Bastok. I won’t go into too much detail on the flag quest as most if not all of it is described here:

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?realm=Bastok&fquest=100

————————————————————-

Ninjutsu - Say hello to my little friend. He will soon be your friend too. Ninjutsu is just like any other magic, you skill it up the same and you cannot cast it if you are silenced. The differences are they cost no MP whatsoever, and they use "tools" to cast their spells. If a Ninja doesn’t have the proper tools, then he cannot cast his spell, even if he has it learned. Tools usually range from 4k-7k in price for a stack of 99, and one stack can last about an hour depending on how much you actually use it. The one thing I do not know (I’m sorry ><) is if using Ninjutsu will cause you to catch aggro from a MOB who aggros to magic.

Utsusemi: Ichi - Your best friend. You know, the one that comes over and eats all your food and runs up your electricity bill by using your washer and dryer. Utsusemi creates copy images of yourself (or "shadows" is what I’ll refer to them as). When an enemy attacks you, he will attack your shadow rather than you. Your shadows have the same Agil and Evasion rating, so with good evasion, you can manage to never get hit pre-37 (very difficult, dependant on mobs as well). Utsusemi uses Shihei, which ranges 5k - 5.5k per stack on my server. Utsusemi has a 30 second recast timer on it, so you have to get a feel on when to use it because you won’t get it for 30 seconds after that. Also, keep in mind that you can be interupted when casting this, so having a back-up voke is a great idea if you’re "blink-tanking".

The Quest for Utsusemi: Ichi -

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?fquest=283
http://www.zebraflood.com/ninja/ninjutsu.html

You must have some fame gained in Norg to do this quest. I don’t know the exact amount, but there is a reason that Zinc Ore and Yagudo Necklaces are still sold all the time. 4 Zinc Ore will return you 350 gil (done in Port Bastok, Talib F-6). 4 Yagudo Necklaces will return you 200 gil (done in Windurst Woods, Nanaa Mihgo J-3). You might see threads or posts about Rice Balls needing to be a certain price to do the quest. I was quoted 153 on the price of rice balls and I had enough fame to do the quest when the price for my rice balls was 161. I’d say about 40 quests today should bring you up to speed to get Utsusemi and Tonko.

Tonko: Ichi - This uses the Ninja tool Shinobi-tabi. Tonko makes you invisible. Shinobi-tabi will run you about 7k a stack (less if your lucky). Do this at the same time as Utsusemi, that way you have 2 spells out of the way right away.

The Quest for Tonko: Ichi -

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?fquest=246
http://www.zebraflood.com/ninja/ninjutsu.html

Elemental: Ichi - If possible, buy these in Norg and put them in your Moghouse (or inventory if you will have room that long). These are not necessary, but they are great for raising your Ninjutsu skill. Find the powder that costs the least on your server and just spam that every now and then and watch the skill points fly. Huton is nice for Clippers (as it lowers their Ice resistance, and Hyoton is great for Valkurm (as BLMs almost always only cast Fire while there).

Kurayami: Ichi - I would suggest getting this. In a perfect world, you’d have a mage that will Blind the target every fight, but sometimes that’s just not available. This is great to have if you are trying to blink tank as it will miss you more often allowing you to keep your shadows out longer.

Hojo: Ichi - Get this as well. Slows the target. See above. When blink tanking, having an extra second between attacks is priceless.

—————————————————

What is Blink Tanking? - When you use Utsusemi, you get 3 shadows that will absorb hits and disappear. When you are blink tanking, your main purpose is to not get hit, while holding the mobs attention. AoE attacks will still cause damage, and will also absorb ALL of your shadows (bomb toss, stonaga, diaga). Be smart with the MOBs you decide to blink tank, MNK type creatures are not good for blink tanking as they get 2 swings in at a time possibly absorbing 2 shadows per attack.

When should I cast Utsusemi? - Immediately after you kill a mob is always a good time to cast it. It’s good to fall back on in case you catch that unwanted aggro before your next fight. Also, when you have it on already, you can start casting it after 2 shadows have been absorbed and not be interrupted while the 3rd one absorbs the attack that would normally interrupt your casting. If you are being attacked, you have to have perfect timing. Right as the MOB is attacking, you must cast off Utsusemi.

—————————————————

Equipment - Use Katanas. Swords sound better at first, but save those until post 10 if you absolutely must use them. Having Katana WS is great for all PTs and will allow you to SC more often and be more creative (every PT now has a n00b with a sword anyway). Once you get to level 10 and obtain Dual Weld, then you can grab a sword for your "Sub" slot. You’ll still get Katana WS as it’s in your main slot. Once you have dual weld, make sure you wear the absolute best weapon you can in your "Sub" slot. Sword, Katana, even a Bulky Staff of Inconvenience… whatever is the best in respects to delay and attack. Just make sure you have skill in that particular skill so you aren’t’ missing every time you swing.

—————————————————-

Your other best friend: Thiefs should be your best friend. Blink tanking is nice, but using Ninjutsu takes a long time and you miss out on some crucial hate keeping strikes. Provoke can only do so much. Having a THF SATA off of you level 30+ is the bomb. If you have a good THF, the MOB won’t even know there are other PT members, nor will he care. He’ll be too busy ‘trying’ to hit you.

—————————————————-

Leveling Strat:

Level 1-12 - Anywhere you can get exp is good. There is no awesome Mob to hit or not until you have Utsusemi.

Level 12-75 - If you are blink tanking, the monsters that attack the slowest are the best. MNK types are definitely out, and AoEs should be out as well. If you are not blink tanking, anything should work, just be prepared to take hate in case you see a bad WS being used (Final Sting, Screw Driver, Helldive). These skills are usually killers, it’s nice to have your shadow absorb them and keep the mages MP high for longer chains.

Samurai (Final Fantasy ii)

The Samurai is an over the top blade master. He trusts his blade more then anything else, and only needs it to survive. The Samurai is able to tote heavy armor and use single-handed swords. He is especially effective against demons due to the increasing active and passive skills to combat them. Another noticeable trait of the Samurai is the incredible increase of Tactical Points. This lets the character dish out a constant amount of attacks without worry.

For the preferred race, I recommend the Mithra. They are agile and dexterous, making them not only deadly but quick. As a sub class, try to keep away from caster classes. Focus on another melee class such as dragoon or thief, increasing the attack speed tremendously with sneak attack when a mob least expects it. In the active abilities table, the Samurai gains some noticeable features.

Ability – Level – Description
Wise Reflection – 1 – TP cost of weapon skills go to 100
Demon Circle – 5 – Increases protection against demons for the group
Heart Eye – 15 – Dodges next attack
Silent Concentration – 30 – Charges up the TP Gauge

The best part is, heart eye and silent concentration is in a low one minute timer. This means you can have a nearly endless TP bar and dodge an attack every 60 seconds.

For passives:
Ability – Level – Description
Resist Blind – 5 – Increase resistance to blind
Store TP – 10 – Increase TP gain speed
Demon Killer – 40 – Increase damage against demons

For groups remember the Samurai isn’t the best damage receiver. If you plan to be the main tank, try and group up with a warrior sub job. This will give a nice boost to HP and give you the ability to pull agro from healers and casters. The Samurai can only be 100% effective if he can just lay down some hate without taking damage from the enemy.

An important point to NEVER forget about the Samurai is the Heart Eye and Silent Concentration skills listed above. The low timer must NOT be forgotten, since they are both very useful skills.

Final Fantasy XI Gil.

Parties Explained (Final Fantasy xxx)

In FFXI everyone will find themselves in a group at one time or another, whether it’s to do a quest, gain xp, or hunt for Gil and loot. This guide will walk you through the steps needed in order to be a helpfull group member and one that is asked to come back instead of asked to leave.

Low Level Grouping

Before I get into specifics, I would like to clear up some confusion about low level grouping. As it stands, many people have said that it is not worth it to group at low levels. This is most easily cleared up with some numbers and an example. If you are level 5 and fighting solo and you kill a monster that gives 50xp, and you can kill it once every minute then we’ll say you are getting 50xp/minute. Now, let’s say you group with someone the same level as you (you are both level 5) and you fight the same monster. It will only give 30xp to each of you. At first, it appears that you are making less xp by grouping. But when you think about it, you can kill these creatures twice as fast with 2 people, so you are really making 60xp/minute, more than if you were by yourself.

Now let’s say that you level up but your partner does not (level 6 and level 5). The xp the monster gives to the party is based on how difficult it is to the highest level party member. So the monster that just a second ago was giving 50xp/kill to a single level 5 is now only giving 35xp/kill to a single level 6. The problem here is that your partner is still level 5, so if they were to fight the monster solo they would be getting 50xp/minute instead of 35xp/minute off the same creature. There is another factor though, if you are grouped and you kill this monster the level 6 character would get 21xp/kill. This is 42xp/minute assuming you are still killing them at the same speed, better than 35xp/minute, but your level 5 parter is only getting 15xp/kill. This is because of the penalty placed on him for grouping with someone above his level. So the level 6 character is getting 42xp/minute while the level 5 character is getting 30xp/minute.

As you can see, grouping outside your level range at low levels can really hurt your xp/minute. This is why people think it’s bad to group at low levels. However, as long as you stay grouped with people your level though, you will make better xp than if you were solo. I am hoping that the system allows for wider level variations at the higher levels, but it’s too early to tell. Also, the larger the group the better the xp, partly due to experience chains.

Experience Chains

Experience chains can be a beautifull thing. First I will explain the benefits of getting an experience chain and then I will explain how to get them.

If you successfully do an xp chain, on the first monster you kill in the chain you will get a message saying "EXP CHAIN #1"!. When you get this message you will get a bonus 20xp for whatever it was you just killed. If you get a message saying "EXP CHAIN #2!", then you will get a bonus of 40xp for the kill. At "EXP CHAIN #3!" you will get bonus xp for the kill. As long as you can keep chaining the monsters, you can keep getting more and more xp for each one.

The first requirement for getting an xp chain is that you have to be killing creatures that are "even match" or harder. In order to have the best chance at an xp chain you will probably want to try for even matches with the occasional "tough". The next step is to kill these creatures in quick succession. To qualify as quick succession I think (I will do further testing soo to find out the exact time) you must start attacking the next one within a minute of the death of the first. If you want to get to the second level of an xp chain you will need to attack a third within a minute of the death of the second.

The key to successfully xp chaining is to have a white mage or two in your party and a lot of damage dealers that don’t rely on mana. What needs to happen is you have to kill the monster before it can do a lot of damage to you, and the healers should keep everyone healed. With 2 healers they can take turns healing the fighters and resting, so during a fight, one healer heals and the other rests, then for the next fight they switch. This can be done with a single healer as long as the party isn’t taking too much damage so the healer can rest every other battle. Obviously xp chaining works much better with a full group (6) because a monster that is "even match" will drop very easy due to your numbers.

Being A Productive Group Member

A group of well trained members can level very fast and efficiently while a group with members all fighting as if they were solo will have a difficult time.

White Mage

First we’ll start off with the white mages. As a white mage your purpose is not to do damage, if you are doing damage and healing you will find that the monsters really dislike you and will frequently attack you. Also, at the higher levels you will do no where near the damage of other members, so there is no point in bothering with attacking.

What you want to do is hotkey 6 of your keys to Cure <p0> through Cure <p5> (see the guide on macroing). By doing this you will be able to throw around heals at a moments notice without wasting time navigating through all the menus.

Before you go into a fight you want to cast any beneficial spells on your party that could help with the fight, this always includes protect but some spells aren’t very usefull, such as sleep protection when fighting a monster who doesn’t cast sleep.

Once you are in combat you want to hit the enemy with your debuff spells, Paralyze and Dia are two effective spells at low levels. Many people will say that paralyze isn’t worth casting. I think those are people that have never seen paralyze in action because it is a _very_ helpfull spell. What it does is gives the enemy a chance to be unable to move each time it attacks for the duration of the spell. So if you cast paralyze on an enemy and it lasts for 30 seconds, every time the creature attacks for the next 30 seconds there will be a chance that it will fail the attack and instead be held immoble. You can see when this is happening because it will say "<creaturename> is Paralyzed" in the chat window each time it tries and fails to attack.

Since mana regenerates faster than health, after the battle is over the white mage will want to use any remaining mana it has to heal the party and then /heal to regain all it’s mana. White mages are the most sought after job for groups in this game. If you don’t want to have to spend a lot of time looking for groups and being rejected, a white mage is a good choice.

Warrior

The warrior has a fairly simple job, and one that can easily decide the course of the battle. The job of the warrior is to use the Provoke ability. The most effective way to do this is to write a macro
/ja "Provoke" <t>
and put it in an easy to use macro slot. What provoke does is makes the target more interested in attacking the warrior instead of it’s current target. Normally creatures will go for healers and high damage dealers first, but unfortunately those two can usually take very little damage compared to a warrior.

Provoke has a 30 second reuse time so if there are two warriors in the party it is best to organize with each other when to provoke. There is no point in both warriors provoking at the same time, so it’s best if you take turns. One way is to just take turns provoking every 15 seconds. The other meathod is to only provoke when the creature starts attacking something other than the warrior, and just take turns doing pulling it off.

Monk / Black Mage / Thief

The purpose of these jobs is to do damage. In terms of grouping strategy there isn’t much to them other than dish out as much as you can. If you find yourself getting attacked a lot it’s best to slow down on your damage output a little to allow the warriors to keep the hate from the monsters on them.

Red Mage

The job of the red mage is to fill in for anyone that is missing other than the warrior. If your white mage is having trouble keeping up on the heals (or you don’t have a white mage) the red mage can help with that. If everything seems to be going all right then you can just deal as much damage as you can.

Skill Chains

Do as many of these as you can. I will not go into detail on how they work right now as that is a topic for another tutorial, once you get to the levels where you can skill chain, do so.

Summary

Here are a few points to remember when grouping:
- Don’t group outside your level
- EXP CHAIN as often as possible
- Warriors provoke all the time
- White mages healing first, damage last
- Skill chain whenever possible
- Talk with your party, decide on who will pull and when to stop for /healing
