Making Gil Quickly In FFXI (Final Fantasy 7 pc)

Making Gil Quickly

Tutorial on how/where to make Gil quickly as a new player in FFXI.

Monday, October 27, 2003

Introduction
Gil in Final Fantasy XI is very hard to come by, especially for mages who cannot fight weak monsters alone for items and do it with relative ease like Warriors can. This guide is designed to help you make fast cash at the early stages of the game.

Working the Auction House
The Auction House (AH) is your best friend in making money. Much like a stockbroker works in the stock market, in Final Fantasy XI, the majority of the trading goes on in AH. In Final Fantasy XI, the price for items is set by players in the AH. This means that if you have a monopoly of a certain item, you can charge as much gil as you want, assuming that the demand is there. Furthermore, there are NPCs standing around the AH that will let you transfer items, gil, from player to player. If you have mule accounts, you can send items to their Mog House using this free service. Another benefit to having a mule account is that you can put more items up for sale in the AH because the limit for selling items in the AH is 8 items per character at a time. By setting up mules in each of the three cities, Bastok, San d’Oria, and Windurst, you can mule items to each other and sell them at a higher price in different cities. For example, Windurst stores does not carry the sword Sapara because it is sold only in Bastok, this means that Warriors that started in Windurst cannot buy that sword unless they go and see if there is one for sale in Windurst AH. By selling items from another city, you can add on a “transfer” fee and mark up on the price of the items. Depending on how important the item is, you can double, perhaps triple your profits. The last benefit of setting up mules in each of the three cities is that you can do a price check instantly before bidding on an item that seems to be priced unfairly. Chances are, someone is doing the same thing as you are and selling items that can be bought from stores and selling it at a higher price in a different AH. Items that can be sold are not limited to weapons and armors. Because each city specializes in different guilds, many players will want to buy materials in AH so that they don’t have to run all the way to another city to obtain materials. Another commodity that is commonly traded are magic scrolls. For example, Bastok does not carry the magic scroll of Cure II while San d’Oria and Windurst does.

Pricing your items properly is also very important so that you get paid the most for each of the items you are selling. For example, to synthesis a copper ingot, you need four copper ores and one fire crystal. Suppose you have four copper ores for sale in the AH, and no other copper ores are in stock. Price the first ore at the rate that it is selling. Price the second ore with an additional markup, the same with third, and forth. The reason to price the items at a mark up is because in order to synthesis copper ingots, you must have all four copper ores. This means that the person who is buying the materials will pay more money to complete the set of four.

During first month after you register Final Fantasy XI, you can create up to 16 characters for free. Make sure you delete them before the month is up if you do not want to get stuck with that bill for 16 characters.

Easy, repeatable quests

Depending on which city you start in, you can only do certain quest that’s location specific. In other words, you cannot activate a quest in Bastok from Windurst until you go to Bastok and talk to the NPC that gives the quest. The types of quest you want to focus on are the ones that you can repeat over and over again for easy money.

In Bastok, there is a quest that you can repeat for 700gil each time you give the NPC the item he asked for. The quest is given by a Galka named Pavvke in the bottom residential of the slums in Bastok Mine. Talk to the Galka there and he will ask you to bring him a Silver Name Tag. Next, go to Palborough Mines and kill Quadavs on the second to third floor until they drop the item. The Quadavs in Palborough shouldn’t be much of a problem if you get a friend to go with you. At the end of each battle when you kill a Quadav, they drop gil. Therefore, it’s a good idea to ask a thief to come with you so that the amount of gil dropped will be multiplied by the Thieves’ passive ability, “Gil Finder”.

While you’re in Palborough mines, make sure to target Amethyst Quadavs and Onyx Quadavs because they drop fetish parts that you can sell in stores for at least 190gil, and up to 300gil in AH. Fetish parts are needed for mission 3 in Bastok. Other items that Quadavs drop that sell for good money are the magic Scroll of paralyze, Shell shields, and Quadav backplates.

In San d’Oria, there is a NPC that ask you got Bat Wings. Each time you give him two bat wings, he will give you 200 gil in return. That NPC is located in North San d’Oria, and his name is Secodiand. The weakest bats that you can fight bats just outside of San d’Oria in Ronfaure during the night. In fact, any type of bats that you can drop bat wings. It’s just a matter of how much work you need to do to kill one.

In Windurst, there is a NPC that will ask you to bring him three Spool of Silk, or three Crawler’s Calculus. The NPC that gives that quest is located in Windurst Woods by the Dhalmel zoo, and his name is Illu bohjaa. You cannot mix and match these items; you need to bring him either three Spool of Silk, or three Crawler’s Calculus. Each time you give him three of the same items, he will reward you with 600 gil. To obtain Crawler’s Calculus, or Spool of Silk, go to Sarutabaruta just outside of Windurst and kill Crawler’s there.

Guilds

Guilding is also another good way of making easy money. It doesn’t take a lot of guilding skills to make simple items such as equipment for beginners. The guilds I recommend joining for easy money are: Blacksmith, Weaver, Tanner and Bone worker. The recipes for Blacksmith items require only common items. Items that you would be making as a Blacksmith are bronze daggers, harness, swords, and caps. These items are very low level, which means that low-level players will buy them for cheap upgrades. I also recommend the Weaver guild because as a weaver, you can make doublets and cotton doublets that all non-warriors will essentially wear. Doublets are a very popular item for mages and monks. If you decide to join the Tanner’s guild, you can make simple mantles that level 1 players can wear. Since stock characters do no come with capes, mantles are very popular items as well. Similar to Tanner, Bone workers at early levels can make simple accessories that low level players want because stock characters do not come with earrings, hairpins, or a second ring. Popular items for early stage Bone workers are shell earrings, shell rings, and bone hairpins.

Bazaars
To set up a bazaar, go into the menu screen and price each of the items to the desired price. Players will be able to browse through your bazaar even if you are AFK. The best place to set up shop overnight while you are sleeping or away from the game is around the auction houses. Bazaar is another way to sell items if your AH account already has the limited amount of items up for sale. It is a good idea to sell items at a discount on bazaars so that people will buy from you first before buying from the AH.

Final words
Remember, the more you jack up the price of your items, the more people will have to jack theirs up to pay for them. In other words, if all items are inflated, you will suffer the consequences as well. Money comes, and money goes. Basically it’s always the same money that circulates around. Let Ragnorok be a lesson to the rest of the servers in Final Fantasy XI, where a pair of Leaping Boots cost 500,000gil.

FFXI Mining Tutorial (FFXI macros)

FFXI Mining Tutorial

All there is to know about Mining in FFXI

Wednesday, November 19, 2003

Mining is a very worthwhile profession to undertake in. Probably the biggest advantage with mining is that it is a “no skill” job, which means that everyone and anyone who mines does so at the same level, since there is no skill you can gain in the job. Unfortunately, not many people know how easy it is to mine.

The first thing you need to start mining is a pickaxe. Pickaxes are easy enough to obtain at the Auction House, and as I write this guide, a stack of twelve goes for about 3000 gil. If you find yourself paying more than 3000 gil for a stack of pickaxes, you are paying too much. Chances are that spending more than 3000 gil will mean that you will not gain a profit from mining. However, the best, and I repeat, best way to get a pickaxe is to have a friend make if for you cheaply, or better yet, to make it for yourself. Making one requires both blacksmithing and woodworking, at low levels however, so it might be a good idea to gain in both if you really want to turn a profit. Of course, if you are already a smith, mining will profit you massively since you will not need to buy your ores from others.

One final note: make sure you have room in your inventory for ore before you go out mining. Ore does NOT stack.

Now you are ready to mine. I recommend for beginners and low level characters to mine in the mines at Bastok, since most of the creatures there are easy, and only a few are aggressive. The hardest/most boring part of mining is finding a mining point. Basically, all you can do to find one is to randomly run around the mines, hitting F8 (Target nearest object/person which isn’t a PC) as you run along. Be sure to check behind monsters, since they might be blocking your macro from finding mining spots that may be behind them. This process may take a minute or so.

Once you find a mining spot, get near it and open up your inventory. Select your pickaxe(s) and “use” it/them. Then, with the mining spot targeted, hit enter. A very short mining animation should ensue. Once this occurs, one of four events may happen:

1) You obtain an ore, or other item such as pebbles.
2) You obtain an ore/item, but your pickaxe breaks in the process.
3) You obtain nothing.
4) You obtain nothing, and your pickaxe breaks.

When you first begin mining, you must be aware of one thing, pickaxes break often. When I say often, I mean OFTEN. It was not uncommon for me to be mining and have my pickaxes break on me after only two or three uses. In fact, in one occasion my pickaxes broke on the first use. I do not know whether or not this breaking is random, or if pickaxes have a durability which wears away over time. Either way, they break.

Also, a mining spot may become exhausted fairly quickly too. If you are lucky, you may be able to get five or six good swings in before the mining spots disappears, meaning there is no more ore to extract there. Once this occurs, you must again run through the mines, looking for another spot as you did before.

Once you obtain a fair amount of ore, you can go sell the ore, or use it yourself. From my experience, the ore that I profit from the best is iron ore, which I was able to sell for 600 gil. However, as the supply/demand for the ores changes, so will the price. Therefore, the best way for you to determine the regional price for ore is to check the Auction House. As a side note, mining may seem tedious, but remember that making it easy would only lower the demand, and therefore the price, of ores. And there you have it, mining 101. Now go out there and make some money! Have fun!

Macros (Final Fantasy tactics walkthrough)

FFXI Macros in Detail

Get a handle on FFXI Macros

All trademarks and copyrights contained in this document are owned by their respective trademark and copyright holders.</font size=0>

Final Fantasy XI has a built in macro system which you can use to automate various tasks. Although you can macro anything that has a command associated with it, macros are most useful when automating chat messages and combat. In this short guide I will go over these two uses for macros and touch briefly on how you can use them in other situations. Hopefully, after reading this guide, you will be able to write your own macros and use the macroing system as you see fit.

To get started lets go over some of the basics of macroing in FFXI. First off, you can have up to 200 macros at a time, 10 banks of 20 each. To access a macro you will have to switch the macro bank to the one your macro is on and then press and hold either the control key (for the first 10) or the alt key (for the second 10) followed by press the corresponding number (1-0). This sounds difficult and confusing at first but it’s really not that bad.

For those of you coming from SWG you will be disappointed to know that macros in FFXI can only have 6 commands in them and they can not loop or call other macros. Even with these limitations, macros can still be very beneficial to you and your party.

Chat

Chat macros can be very useful when you are in a combat situation and you need to get information to your party as fast as possible. Without a macro you would have to type out the text you wanted to say and many times, by the time you finished typing, your message would be irrelevant or outdated. First off let’s go over some of the more useful chat commands that you can put into your macro.

<t>
When this is in a macro it will be replaced with the name of whatever you have selected. If you have a creature named “Wallawonk” selected and you type <t>, you will say “Wallawonk” in chat. So if you wanted to let the party know what you are attacking you would say, “/p I am attacking <t>.” This would say, “I am attacking Wallawonk.” to your party.

<p0> <p1> <p2> <p3> <p4> <p5>
These all work the same as <t> except they are for party members. <p0> is always your character and <p1> through <p5> are the other members of your part in the order they are listed on your screen. So if you are in a party with Joe, and Bob and you type, “/p Hello <p1> and <p2>!” you would say, “Hello Joe and Bob!” to your party.

<me>
Exactly the same as <p0>.

<hp>
This will be replaced with your current health displayed as <current>/<max>. So if you currently have 100 health and you have a maximum of 200 health then typing “/p My health is <hp>.” will make you say “My health is 100/200.” to your party.

<mp>
The same as <hp> except for mind points.

<hpp>
This works the same as <hp> except instead of saying <current>/<max> it will give a percentage. So if you type “/p My health is <hpp>%.” your party will hear you say, “My health is 50%.”

<mpp>
The same as <hpp> except for mind points.

<tp>
The same as <hpp> except it gives your current amount of tactical points as a percentage.

<pos>
Displays your current grid coordinates. ex: C-5.

<mpos>
The same as pos but for use when in an air ship or water ship.

Other Commands

For a full list of commands and their uses check out the tutorial on commands. I will list a few of the ones that are particularly useful in macros here.

/wait <seconds>
Wherever you put this in a macro, the macro will stop running for the number of seconds you specify. This is good for when you want to pause between messages or actions. NOTE: there is a max wait time of 20 seconds.

/echo <message>
This command will send <message> to you and only you. No other players will ever see this message. This is particularly useful for notifying you of the progress of your macro.

/item <item name>
With this command you can have your macro make you eat a certain food item or use a potion. This is exceedingly useful because you don’t have to navigate through your inventory which can be quite time consuming.

/equip <item name>
Use this to equip armor and/or weapons. Great if you have a couple sets of armor or a second set of weapons that you swap between frequently.

/ma “<spell name>” [target]
This is probably the most used macro out there. What this does is casts <spell name> onto [target]. If the spell does not require a target you can leave the target blank. You can combine this with the variables above to make spell casting very simple. For example, if you wanted to cast cure on your current target you could write this macro, “/ma Cure I <t>”. That would cast Cure 1 on your current target. If you wanted, you could setup a cure macro for each party member. eg: “/ma Cure I <p2>”. Remember that spell names have to be spelled correctly and use proper capitalization.

/ws “<skill name>” [target]
The same as /ma except it’s for weapon skills.

/ja “<ability name>” [target]
The same as /ma except it’s for job abilities.

The Macros

Here are a few sample macros to get you started. These should speed up your response time in battle and help reduce the wrist pain from typing.

/p Health <hpp>: <hp> Mana <mpp>: <mp> Tactical: <tp>
This will list off your health, mana, and tactical points in both percentage and current/max form. It’s especially useful if everyone in the party uses the same format. That way, when you are done with a fight, everyone can hit their macro key for this and it’ll give a nice chart displaying everyone’s current status.

/p Running out of mana (<mpp>): <mp>.
This is a good one for mages to use, especially white mages. It lets your party know that you are getting low on mana so they need to be extra careful and that they may need to use health potions if they get especially low.

/ws “Provocation”
/p Using Provocation!
/wait 20
/wait 10
/p Provocation is ready to be used again.
This macro will make it so that when you use it, you will use your provocation ability and tell your part as much. Then 30 seconds later (this is the cool down time for provocation) you will tell your party that you are ready to use it again. This can be useful if you are in a party with multiple warriors so you don’t all use their provocation at the same time.

/p About to attack <t>!
/wait 4
/lockon <t>
/wait 1
/attack <t>
This macro will tell your party the name of the creature you are about to attack and then it will lockon to the target (if you have /automove on then you will run towards it) and then attack it. You may notice there is a 1 second wait time between /lockon and /attack. Sometimes if you put two commands right after each other they will not work and they need to be spaced out with a /wait.

Conclusion

You can do much more than what I have listed here. These samples and the commands I have listed should give you a good starting point though and get you well on your way towards becoming a macro master.

Dragon Quest (Final Fantasy dirge of cerberus)

Dragon Quest
So we’re all dying to fight that dragon huh? We all want that rank 3 so we can continue moving up, and this dragon seems to be a pesky critter to vanquish, not to mention the 2-3 hours it takes to complete all the preliminaries to fighting the dragon. This, along with constant "dragon complaints" on the LS have inspired me to do a write up on how to easily take the dragon down. Granted there are 2 methods to this.

1. Complete everything required before fighting the dragon, find a JP group to venture with you to Yugatto and take the dragon down.
2. Do the entire quest with a group of 23-25, and then journey to fight the dragon.

I highly recommend the JP group. It’s the best way NOT to die.

When taking the Emissary mission there are two roads you can go. Bastok>San d’orio or Bastok Windurst. I went the Bastok>Windurst route. So that is the way I will take you all.

The quest starts by speaking with a mythril musketeer. I will not give out any story details so there will be no spoilers in here. After you have recieved the mission these are the steps you must take.

1. Visit Naji at the Presidents office for the full orders of your mission.
2. Travel to Selbina and go to I-10, the Sea Travel Agency. Purchase your ticket to Mhaura.
3. From Mhaura you must go Buburimu Peninsula>Tahrongi Canyon>East Sarutabaruta>West Sarutabaruta>Windurst.
4. Once in Windurst you must visit the Bastok Consulate at Port Windurst (E-5) and speak with Melek.
5. After she has spoken with you go to E7 and speak with Machu-Machu I believe and he will transport you to Windurst Walls.
6. Here go to Heavens Tower (H7) and zone in. Now you must find Kipipu, he is straight back through the doors. Once you have recieved the key item from him run back to the Bastok Consulate and have it switched for the other key item. Now you are ready to travel again.
7. Rent a Chocobo if you like, but it isn’t really a long walk. Travel to F4 and zone into Giddeus.
8. Once inside seek out Uh Zhoumo and talk to him. He won’t take your key item. Now you must go to G7 in Giddeus and wait for Eyy Mon the Ironbreaker to spawn. Kill him, he will drop an Aspir knife and then you can trade that to Zhoumo and continue on.
9. Back to Windurst Walls. Speak with Kipipu in Heavens tower and the Consul again. They will thank you and then it will be time to go to San d’Orio
10. The trip is a long one. But can be shortened if you use a white mage with warp to take you from Telepoint, to Telepoint (telepoints are located at the Crags or have warp scrolls. Otherwise consult your maps and region info to get to San d’Oria.
11. IF none of those options are available get a choco and travel West Sarutabaruta>Tahrongi Canyon>Meriphataud Mountaion>Sauromongue
Champaign>Jueno. Get another choco in Jueno and travel to Rolanberry>Battalia>Jugner Forest>La Theine>West Ronfaure>San d’oria.
12. Once in Sand head to Northen Sand and visit the Bastok Consulate at J-9. Speak with Helaku and then you will be asked to go to Chateau d’Oraguille located in Northen San at J-7.
13. Speak with Halver in the first room and you will be asked to go to the Yughott Grotto.

At this point it is absolutely necessary to have a Party of 20+ people. The creatures in Yughott are aggressive and are all 20+. I recommend 2 heaers whm with blm full support jobs. 3 warriors all with support jobs. Then at least one other class that can backup heal. The dragon is NOT easy. I didn’t have the maps for any of these places but it is not hard to find with a little exploring. Or you can get the maps. I think they can be bought in San d’Oria from the map vendor. Never looked into it.

14. Travel to E-4 in West Ronfaure then go Ghelsba Outpost>Fort Ghelsba (J-8)>Yughott Grotto (J-6).
15. Here there is a burning circle. DO NOT go into the battlefield till everyone is ready.
16. Ok zone in. Wait for everyone else and let all buffs etc. get put up. Then heal till MP is full.
17. When you get to the battlefield there will be a cutscene. After this the fight will begin.
18. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU KILL THE SPOTTER FIRST. Ignore the dragon and focus only on heals. Have the warriors provoke well to keep damage heals to min. Treat this like any normal pull. Use your 2hours if you must. Once the spotter is down, kill the dragon, enjoy the cutscene and head back to San d’Oria to speak with the consulate. again.
19. HOME FREE. Travel back to Bastok report to Naji, watch the cutscene and WALA 3k gll and rank 3.

Hope this helps everyone. I did the best I could with the maps and whatnot that I had.

Feinam’s Auction Tutorial (FFXI guild)

Feinam’s Auction House Tutorial

The Ins and Outs of the FFXI AH

Monday, November 1, 2003

The Auction House is the wonderful system put in place in FFXI to easily sell and buy items. This is a great resource if you want to make good gil with the treasure you receive as opposed to wasting a LOT of money by selling it to merchants.

Basics:
You don’t need to be online for your items to be up for sale, and the guy you’re buying from doesn’t need to be on for you to grab something off him. You can get into the auction menu by going to the auction house and double clicking on the auction window. When you sell something in an auction a small fee will be taken from you by the auction house, this is a tiny fee so don’t worry! There are three options in the first screen (Buy, Sell, and Check Status). Buy allows you to look up items by category, sell allows you to post an item, and check status allows you to see what you have up for sale, for how much, and if it’s been sold yet.

Buying:
Only items that have a number next to them in the buy lists are able to be bought! The game keeps a record of all items that are sold there and the history of their prices, but there is only stock available when there is a number next to it labeling how many are up for sale. If you’re looking for items you can use it’s easy just to scroll and look for yellow text items (meaning you can use them) with a number next to them. Next select the history of prices and do a rough estimate of what the average is. Then bid a bit below the average, if it fails move your bid up and continue until you have the item. No matter how many people are selling that particular item if you start low and work your way up you’ll buy off of the seller with the lowest reserve price.

Selling:
You can have up to 7 items up for sale at a time. You can either sell 1 item or 12 in a stack and that only takes up one sale spot. First track down your item in the buy menu, check the history, and figure out the average. If you need quick money set it just a little lower than average, or if you want a good price and you’re patient set it on the high side of the bids you see in the history. When you check your sales status if it is highlighted that means it’s been sold, go ahead and go to it, read the message at the top and then hit enter. At this time the money you got for the sale goes to your mog house (residential area).

Remember, always check what the item is worth before you sell it on auction or even worse to a merchant. Perhaps that "useless" item is actually worth enough to get you a new weapon, spell, or piece of gear =).

Overview

Greetings, and welcome to the wonderful world of fishing in FFXI. I can’t speak for everyone here, but when I first saw the section in the strategy guide labeled "The Fishing Guild" I thought to myself "Oh great, well there’s something I surely won’t be doing".

This line of reasoning was further reinforced after watching the 50 or so people standing around town just tossing their lines into the water over, and over, and over again. Gee, what fun! While those lamers were wasting time, I got onto the fun stuff namely introducing as many monsters to my sword as possible.

There came a time however when I started needing some new armor and gear. (It’s never a good thing when the enemy starts laughing as you approach) Fire crystals were selling well, mostly due to all those wierdos crafting out there. I must have sold about 30k worth of fire crystals before it occured to me to wonder how those wierdos got the money to buy all of my crystals. I mean, all they do is sit around staring at spinning crystals all day! I started asking around and for every "Goldsmithing" or "Alchemy" answer I received, I must have gotten about ten answers of "What, are you stupid? Fishing!"

Fishing? Err okay. So after I logged that night I started searching around for everything I could find out about….fishing. The following guide is what I’ve been able to put together from around three months of searching and piecing together bits and pieces from different guides, message forums, rumors, facts, and the occasional daydream. There will be links to some of those sites and forums at the end of the guide. On to the main course!

The Basics

Ah, the basics. This section alone could take a few pages. I’m going to do my best to summarize as much as possible. Game mechanics is just going to explain (Hopefully clearly) how the server comes into play while fishing.

Game Mechanics

Fisherman A (Let’s just say he’s a handsome Galkan Ninja named Chebasaz) decides to do some fishing. Chebasaz finds a suitable place to fish, puts some bait on his hook and casts his line. For the purpose of this explanation we’re going to say he’s fishing for the all-powerful Moat Carp in Windhurst Woods, and he’s currently at a fishing skill of 5. His pole is a glass fiber rod, and he’s using some Insect Balls */chuckle* as bait.

As his line sits in the water, the server takes into account all manner of things. It looks at the time of the day in-game, looks at the phase of the moon, looks at the weather, looks at the bait, looks at that cute mithra running by.. Err scratch that last one, just making sure you’re paying attention!

Fish bite more often on a Full and New Moon. You can check the status of the moon cycle by typing in /clock on in your chat screen. If it’s raining or windy this will also cause the fish to bite more. Also fish bite more at night than during the day, but the best times is Dawn and Dusk. So following all of that logic, the absolute best time to catch fish would be during the Full Moon, during a double rain storm, at Dawn :)

After looking at all of the above mentioned things, the server decides whether or not you’re going to get a bite, and what that bite is going to be. Of course Chebasaz is still clueless at this point, he’s still waiting for something to… Ah a bite! Now comes the fun part, the server knows what’s on the end of that line. It could be a Moat Carp, it could be a Rusty Bucket, it could even be a Gold Carp. We’re going to say it’s a Moat Carp on this one. While Chebasaz is dancing around like a little girl, the server takes a look at his skill (Currently a 5, a bit low but workable) then takes a look at his rod. Why the rod you ask? Well I’m going to tell you if you’d shaddup for a second! What’s with all the questions? Jeez!

The server assigns a weight and size to every fish that you catch. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Bastore Sardine, or a Rusty Subligar, it’s got a weight and size to it. You’ll start noticing these sizes when you fish for the bigger fish, such as the Monke-Onke or Bhefhel Marlin. They’re usually located in the bottom part of the fish description. The smaller fish (The ones that can stack) don’t have a visible weight/size, but they have one nonetheless. When Chebasaz finally gets around to trying to reel in his fish, the server checks the Moat Carp size and weight against the size/weight capabilities of the glass fiber rod he’s using. If the glass fiber rod can support that size and weight, then the server then checks to see if Chebasaz’s skill will allow him to catch the fish. Otherwise, if the server checks the rod and sees that the weight/size of this particular Moat Carp is higher than the Rod’s max size/weight limit; the rod is going to break. Nasty snap sound follows, you lose your bait, the fish, and you get a nice shiny new "Broken Rod" in your inventory. We’ll discuss later on how to fix those or how to get rid of them.

Now here’s something alot of people don’t seem to realize. The server checks to see if you get a skill increase once you get a bite, not once you catch the fish. Obviously we all would like to catch every fish that bites, however it’s not really needed in order to get the skill increases. As long as you get the bite, the hard part’s over. Once you get enough of those skill increases then the catching of the fish will soon follow.

Borrowing our handsome Ninja Chebasaz again, here’s an example- Let’s say that Chebasaz gets a bite, but the server decides that his fishing skill (It’s at a 5 remember) isn’t enough to pull in that Moat Carp on the end of his line. The battle of Galkan vs. Fish ends up with the fish winning and Chebasaz gets a "You lost your catch!" message. Now the server does another check. The server looks at the fish’s maximum skill cap (For Moat Carp it’s 11) and then looks at Chebasaz’s current skill level (Which is at 5). After a few other totally random calculations from what I can tell, it either decides to award a skill increase or not. Since Chebasaz is pretty depressed right now that he lost his catch, we’re going to go ahead and give him a "0.2" increase. Chebasaz will continue to be able to receive skill increases from the Moat Carp until he hits skill level 11. At that time he’ll still be able to catch them (And catch them well) but he won’t get any higher without moving on to another kind of fish.

As long as we’re talking about getting high, *In fishing skill, get your mind out of the gutter!*, what are the benefits of the higher levels you ask? Well, besides being able to catch more of those fish, and having a better chance of them biting in the first place, a higher skill also effects quite a few other things. The delay in between casts gets smaller for starters. For a beginning fisherman, you have "about" a 10 second pause in between each cast from the time you put your rod away until you can cast again. For every 10 skill levels you receive, you can take 1 second off of that pause. So for instance if Chebasaz was now skill level 20, it would only take him 8 seconds to be able to cast again. (10 seconds – 2 seconds for skill level = 8 seconds)

The Tools

Alright, a quick breakdown of the rods and baits available out there for your fishing pleasure. Look over the lists and then we’ll go into more detail further on down the way.

Rods for Small Fish
Bamboo
Willow
Mithran
Glass Fiber
Carbon
FastWater
Yew
Tarutaru
Lu Shang
Composite

Rods for Larger Fish
Clothespole
Mithran
Lu Shang
Composite

Now I can already see the mob with the pitchforks and torches screaming "Wait a second! You put Lu Shang and Mithran on both lists you loser!" Yep, sure did.. The reason being is that some of the "Big" rods, such as Composite, can catch smaller fish perfectly well depending on what fish you’re going after. On the flip side of things, the Lu Shang Rod, which is theoretically classed as a "Small" fishing rod is perfectly capable of pulling in most large fish as well.

Now the only danger is that if you’re using a "Big" rod to catch small fish you might get the occasional "Whatever you hooked is too small for this rod" if that individual fish’s weight/size is too low. (Remember we talked about the weight/size?) Visiting the flip side once again, if you’re using a "Small" rod to catch big fish, you run the risk of one of those fish’s size/weight being so high that it either breaks your line, or breaks your whole rod! And to dispell a common myth, the Lu Shang rod CAN BE BROKEN. Once again we’ll go over how to fix those later on in the Tricks of the Trade section.

On to the Bait and Lures, which we’re going to break into two seperate parts named.. "Bait" and "Lures" The coincidence is just scary isn’t it?

Bait
Crayfish Ball
Insect Ball
Lugworm
Little Worm
Peeled Shrimp
Peeled Crayfish
Sardine Ball
MeatBall
Shell Bug
Sliced Sardine
Sliced Cod
Slice of Bluetail
Trout Ball

Lures
Frog Lure
Worm Lure
Minnow
Sinking Minnow
Fly Lure
Sabiki Rig
Shrimp Lure
Rogue Rig

Now I’m not going to list here every type of fish and what kind of bait/lure it likes best. There’s other sites and guides out there for that, and I’ll provide links to them at the end. What I do want to do here is touch on a few misconceptions and maybe share some things you didn’t know about the lures/bait.

First of all, the difference between bait and lures. Not a tough one here, a lure you can use over and over again; at least until the line or rod breaks. (Weight and size remember?) Bait you buy usually in stacks of 12 and you use one piece of bait for every bite, not every cast.

The Sabiki Rig – Great for starting fisherman and for those that have a certain type of saltwater fish they want to farm. Let me say that again with the important part in caps- Great for starting fisherman and for those that have a certain type of SALTWATER fish they want to farm. It’s a saltwater lure, although the idea of catching three moat carp in a row did have me trying it too. ;)

Rogue Rig – This is a big one. If you were like me, you’re just looking at it in the auction house.. Wondering what in the world you catch with the thing in order to make it cost 20k+. I mean, do you pull up bags of gil with the thing or what? The Rogue Rig is meant for mainly one purpose. It’s an item catcher. It excels on catching rusty/other items. It can catch fish as well, don’t get me wrong; but it’s main purpose is for items. Why on earth would you actually want to catch rusty items? Well, Rusty Caps go for 2k to the vendor. Other quests require you to catch certain items (Cap quest in Windy for example). Now before you rush out an lay down 20k+ on one of these things, every single thread I’ve read says that you need to be 40+ in skill before these start working for you well.

Insect Balls – Makes me chuckle everytime I type that out. These are your bread and butter on moat carp. Yeah they bite on worms and worm lures too, but the bite/catch rate is almost doubled with these. We’ll go over why that’s important later on, but wanted to touch on this since it drives me nuts to get a "Why are you catching 10 times the fish I am?" /tell in game only to learn they’re using worms because they’re cheap.

The Locations

I got an Email in my Spam mailbox the other day that said "Location, Location, Location is a lie!" Well, maybe in whatever pyramid-scheme-world that guy was trying to sell me on, but in fishing it’s still the almighty truth. Once you start going after certain fish it’s going to be important to know where those fish like to hang out. For instance the Nebimonite fish. Suckers go for 12k a stack on Ragnarok. They’re used in Alchemy in order to make Black Ink which is used for Ninjitsu tools and a few other things. Now if I wanted to go get my Ninja self some, (in order to make some tools to flip out and kill everyone with), I’d have to know that I could get them from the Ferry in between Selbina and Mharua.

There’s going to be a link at the bottom of this guide to one of the best sites I’ve found out here for this. It’s a Japanese site, but the owner did it extremely well for us poor English folks to understand. It’s pretty self explanatory so this is going to be probably the shortest section in the guide.

The Catches

There’s always a catch, didn’t anyone ever tell you that? This section is just going to lay out the areas that I myself used in order to level up. This isn’t going for money, that’s two sections down. This is just the fastest way that I’ve found in order to progress through the skill point treadmill.

1-11 This one’s easy, windhurst all the way. You’re going to need to be here anyway for the fisherman guild and the advanced support, so you might as well just start here :) You can start off on moat carp if you like, though I suggest grabbing you a glass fiber rod and worms and letting it rip in Port Windhurst’s docks. This will let you get to at least 9 on Bastore Sardines/Quus/Cobalt Jellyfish/Kelp. Stay away from the Sabiki lure until you are able to afford a rod that won’t break and make you lose your lure (Composte/Mithran should be safe here) Once you get to 7′sh or so you can swap to Moat Carp, glass fiber or mithran and insect balls. Save these things! We’ll go over why in the Rewards section. Don’t forget to take your test at 9′sh in skill.

11-18′sh I personally went to Selbina and fished for Quus (Skill cap of 19) and Greedies. Glass fiber and worms or Composite and Sabiki rig will do you fine here. You can knock out the first Selbina quest here for the Fat Greedie at the same time so it worked out well for me. Head back to Windhurst once you hit 18 to take your next skill test (Chevral Trout needed for this one, I just bought mine) and then head right back to San d’ Oria.

19-27 Go ahead and grab you a composite rod if you haven’t yet. Mithran will break if you try and use it here and those suckers are expensive to be replacing. What we’re going for here is actually outside of San. In East Ronfaur there’s a couple of streams by the front gates of San. We’re going after Chevral Salmon and Shining Trout. Buy you about four or five Fly Lures and start casting. It’s pretty fast skill ups here.

27-28′sh Go ahead and grab the next point at Port San d’ Oria docks. Just use a sinking minnow and your composite rod to grab a few Giant Catfish. You’re going to need them for your next test anyway, and it’s an easy 1 point.

28′sh-40′sh Back to Windhurst! Take your test and then go set up camp along with the other 800 JP fishing bots in East Saru cliffs. You’re going to be ocean fishing here so bring a composite rod and a whole bunch of sliced sardines. Gold Lobsters/Eels/Bladefish/Bastore Breams/ tons of stuff here. Will take awhile but you’ll get the points and make a decent profit here.

40-51 Hey, hey we’re the Monke’s! *Cough* Ahem.. Okay, here’s the deal with this one. Skill points are going to slow down extremely, can’t be helped but you can at least minimize the damage. From this point on you’re going to need to start eyeing that Lu Shang Rod Quest. You know…. The one you have to turn in 10,000 moat carp to the brothers in Port San d’ Oria. Monke-Onke’s are what we’re going after here, in east Saru there’s a lake to the north of the Port Windhurst gate. Tons of Monkes there, plus tons of moat carp. Just start fishing there and saving all those moat carp you catch. Throw them in the bank, load down your mules, whatever it takes until you can get back to San and turn them in. During this time you’re going to be getting some skill increases off the Monke’s. By the time you hit 51 you should have put a pretty serious dent in the quest towards your goal of 10k moat carp.

51-60+ This is where I’m currently at myself. 56 and still fishing off the cliffs in Saru. Breames/BladeFish still give me skill ups so it’s working for me. Anytime I run short of money or need a change of pace, windy and the lake is there to let me fish for Moat Carp. :)

The Dangers

Life would be boring without a little bit of danger wouldn’t it? The danger of fishing in the wild (Outside town zones) is that you can sometimes hook a monster instead of a fish. Now everywhere that I’ve listed so far is safe, I’ve fished there for literally weeks at a time and never once caught anything besides fish and rusty items. However if you decide to go testing the waters at other places, don’t be surprised if you catch something with some pretty sharp teeth. The levels of the monster primarily depend on the area that you’re fishing in. Most of the time it corresponds with the levels of other monsters in that area, but sometimes it does not. Just a word of warning.

Now sometimes you’ll be actually trying to catch these monsters. Some of the quests out there require you to hook and kill these monsters in order to get an item they drop for the quest. Other times, provided you have the party for it, you will be trying to hook and pull aboard such monsters as the Kraken and Sea Horrors just for exp/item purposes.

In the Tricks of the Trade section we’ll touch on how to minimize the risk of these encounters, which is a good thing if you’re in an area that’s a bit too high for your current job level. ;)

The Rewards

Now with all this boredom and danger, there’s got to be a light at the end of the tunnel right? Well there is, and it’s light reflecting off of the hundreds of thousands of gil that’s able to be made by fishing. Going to go over some of the top sellers here-

Moat Carp – Well duh! Absolutely amazes me that people that have been fishing for weeks still don’t know why these sell so well. Remember the moat carp quest for the Lu Shang Rod? You have tons of Japanese players out there with more money then they know what to do with, and no Lu Shang Rod. Why fish for the moat carp when there’s all of us newbie Americans willing to do it for them? So they buy these things up at a phenomenal rate. Across all servers the price seems to be stabilized at 4k per stack. Since it’s such a low fish skill-wise there’s tons of people selling them. DO NOT SELL THEM FOR LESS THAN 4K TRYING TO MAKE A QUICK SELL. Just have the patience to wait for a few hours and it WILL sell at 4k. I guarantee you it’ll sell. There’s no way on earth it won’t sell since the demand is always, always, ALWAYS higher than the supply for these.

Nebimonite – As I mentioned before, big sellers here. Bit hard to get, probably why they sell for so much. 10-15k across most servers for a stack, and used to make Black Ink for the Ninjitsu tools.

Breame’s/Bladefish/ect all sell to the vendors for 600-1k depending on fame level in that town.

Tricks of The Trade

This section is just going to go over some of the tricks that people have used in the past for all manner of things.

How to not catch a monster on the ferry from Mharua to Selbina -

Easy one here, a monster when caught appears just behind you. It’s an actual "Spawning" of that monster from the server. Since that’s the case, you can stand on the stairs leading from the main deck of the ferry to the upper deck and fish all day without catching any monsters. The monster doesn’t have room to spawn since each step is so tiny.

How to not catch a monster in other places -

Using that same logic as above, the trick to not catching a monster in other areas is to find something close enough to the water you can put your back to; but still have room to fish. If you find a rock for instance that you can put your back to while still able to fish in front of you, the monster will not have room to spawn again. Hence saving you from the hassle of having to fight him at all.

Personal thoughts on when to pull in a catch -

I just basically watched the JP players on this one. Even though half of them are bots, most of them do pull in the catch in between the third and fourth character animation of the rod going back and forth. It works extremely well for me when catching moat carp, though of course it’s your call on when you personally do it.

Catching rusties for profit-

I came across this one on Allakhazam, and although the original poster was blasted as a phony, I still can’t see any fault with the guy’s logic. The server of FFXI has a built in "Anti-bot" code. If you stay at the same place and keep fishing over and over again for around 150 casts, you’ll start catching nothing but rusties. The longer you stay there, the more rusties you’ll catch. Pretty soon you’ll catch nothing BUT rusties. The game’s way of trying to combat all of the JP fishing bots. Of course the JP bots are now just zoning or logging out and that negates that server check. The guy on Allakhazam basically tried to use the server check against itself. He says he bought a rogue rig, and stayed in the same spot for hours.. Because of the server check, he started catching literally tons of Rusty Caps. (2k to vendor remember?) Filled up his inventory with them and walked away with over 100k in rusty items.

Gobby Bag Quests-

Can’t even stress how important it is to do these things if you’re going to be fishing.. Yeah they cost alot to do, but each one boosts your carrying rate up by 5. Do all four and that’s a maximum personal inventory of 50 and that’s alot of room for bait and fish. It’ll be worth it in the long run, and you can use those moat carp to get the money for them in the first place.

Woodworking and Alchemy-

Ah, all those broken poles in your inventory getting you down? Well here’s what you need in order to fix them.

Glass Fiber Rod – 22 in Alchemy and a Light Crystal will let you repair it. 29 is the cap for this one, though I have never lost a broken rod on a failure.

Mithran Rod – 83 in Woodworking and a Light Crystal

Lu Shang Rod – 80 in Woodworking and a Light Crystal, I’ve seen reports of high 80′s/low 90′s in Alchemy also being able to repair, but of course a little hard for me to test out for myself.

Fastwater – 56 in Woodworking and Light Crystal

Other Links to the Specifics

Here’s some links to actual tables of fish and needed skill, and other various things of interest. Props go to the people that put each of these together for us all. You’re going to have to copy and paste theses, mainly because some of them (Gamefaq) doesn’t allow straight links, and also because I’m much too lazy to fight with UBB and HTML :)

http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/final_fantasy_xi_fishing.txt

A pretty decent FAQ on the needed skills for each fish type. Was translated by Babelfish so it’s a bit rough, but a good quick reference.

http://www.fishermanrods.net/database_e.cfm?genre=0&fish_id=010

An outstanding site done by a Japanese player. It’s been partially translated into English but all the important stuff is there and understandable. You can check whether or not your pole will break based on the type of fish and where you’re planning on fishing.

http://www.fishermanrods.net/ss_e.cfm

Same site as the above one, but a different part that took me awhile to find. This is a map section that basically lists all the types of fish that can be caught. Drop down menu’s and easy to read indicators.. With the link above it this will pretty much handle everything you need to know.

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=24

Of course then there’s Allakhazam’s. This is the trading guild forums, and still a great place to pick up on new ideas or to get answers to questions that you may have.

http://mysterytour.web.infoseek.co.jp/mt/eng/

The end-all-be-all site as far as I’m concerned when it comes to FFXI. This has everything you could ever need about everything, but it’s got a link to the fishermanrod database on the bottom too. *So there’s my excuse for putting it here* :)

0-3, Result for this is Carrot Broth. Head to G-9 of South Sandy to buy these from Corua. These can be sold through a bazaar and they sell fairly quick as BST use them.

3-6, Result for this is a Hard-Boiled Egg. Not much you can do with this, I just sold them to an NPC as the cost is chump change. You can get bird eggs from the venders that are placed in the area you wait for an airship. As long as the nation you are at is rank 1 or 2, the vender will have bird eggs for sell. If you’re not rank 5, you’ll have to get them from the auction house.

6-11, Result is 2x sliced Sardines. These can be sold to the auction house as players use it to fish. You should most likely break even with this, or even make profit if you fish the ingredients yourself.

11-20, Result for this is Selbina Butter. Hold onto these as you will be using them to make dough. You can buy the milk at Selbina from Dohdjuma at G-10 of Selbina. Rock Salt can be bought by the vender that has Volldow region control. Aulavia at G-7 of Bastok Mines, Lebondur at F-6 of Windy Port, and Millechuca at L-9 of North Sandy.

20-30, Pineapple Juice comes out of this. You can either sell these back to vender for result of little lost or sell them at the auction house and in bazaar, though it will take you a long time as you will have a lot of juice and they don’t stack. The pineapples can be bought by Ghemi Sinterilo at Kazham on the airship side.

30-40, Melon Juice is made with this. You’ll need about 120k or so gil to help invest into this, but you can make your money back by selling all the juice back. Fair warning it will take a long time to sell it back, I had to make 3 extra character just to be able to hold all of the juice. The ingredients for this can be bought in Raboa at F-7 by Scamplix.

40-42, Here you get to use your butter to make pie dough. This item will be used to make the apple pies. You’ll more then likely have some butter left over, you can sell the extra at the auction, people buy this fairly quickly so that they can make dough themselves. Whoever controls the Zulkheim Region has the flour. Usually it’s either Sandy or Bastok, NPC at Sandy is Phamelise at K-9 of South Sandy, Rosswald J-7 in Port Bastok.

42-50, Now we’re cooking! Use the dough you got to make apple pies. These things sell like hot cakes at the auction, you’ll have likely be making profit off of these if you get all the ingredients from venders with control of a region. For the faerie apples whoever controls the Fauregandi region will have the apples. Sheia Pohrichamaha in B-4 of Windy Port, Vichual in F-4 of North Sandy, Rodellieux at H-7 of Bastok Mines. Cinnamon can be bought at Kazham by Ghemi Sinterilo on the airship side. Maple Sugar I just ended up buying it at the auction house.

50-60, Ok from this point on it takes a lot longer to get your skill up, simply because you don’t get skill up as often. The result for this is Yagudo Drinks and these sell fast at the auction house. Both the cherry and the grape can be bought from Ahyeekih at H-10 of Windy Waters. The region for this is Kolshushu and Windy is usually the one in control in this. I have however seen Sandy gain control of this on my server, so in case another region gets it by chance, you can get the items from Fiva at G-6 of Port Sandy and Yafafa at I-5 of Bastok Market. You will break even or make a bit a profit from this.

60-68, Time to make some easter eggs! By now you should know where to get all the ingredients to make these. Currently I’m just selling these back to the vender as there is no use for them. Expect lost from this.

68-72, Time to make Pear au Lait (sounds fancy). These babies regen 3 hp every 3 seconds for 3 minutes. You can get the Derfland Pear from the vender with control of Derfland region. Belka at E-7 of Bastok Port, Pourette at J-9 of South Sandy, and Taraihi-Perunhi at K-10 of Windy Wood are the vender that can sell the pears. Honey you can just buy at the auction. Best to sell these through a bazaar as they don’t stack, but people will buy them as they use it to level up low level classes.

72-76, Chocomilk is made from this recipe. I have no clue atm on how often or for how much these sell for as I’m not at that point of crafting yet. Also these can get you all the way up to 79 skill, but it’s cheaper to Chamomile Tea so we’re just using it to boost up our cooking skill a bit. Kukuru Beans can be bought from Ghemi Sinterilo at Kazham on the airship side.

76-83, Who would of thought that boiling some leaves in water could be so hard! These beauties will get you to 83 skill at a very low cost. Downside to these is that they don’t stack, but they do sell at the auction for at a decent rate. Chamomile can be bought in Upper Jeuno at G-6 by Areebah.

83-86, Marron glace is the result for this level. Not a really good food item from what I can see, this is mainly to just get skill up. No clue on how much or if it even sells at the auction house. Chestnuts (Ronfaure Chestnuts is the actual name of the item) can be bought by Corus at G-9 of South Sandy.

86-90, Vampire juice is the drink and man does it taste good! Red Terrapin can only be fished out so you’ll either have to buy them at the auction house or fish them out yourself, no idea on what fishing skill is needed. Rolanberry can be bought in Upper Jeuno by Champalpeiu at G-6. Mithran Tomatoes are sold by the Mithra at the airship of Kazham.

90-92, Flint Caviar is the dish and wow is this stuff fancy. In order to get the Emperor Roe you need to get an Emperor Fish. Use a lightning crystal on it to make Emperor Roe. Save the Flint Caviar as you’ll be using it for level up even more.

92-94, Tonosama Rice Ball is what we are making and from what I hear these sell for 10k a stack. Something to do with samurai gloves and the opo opo crown that give you bonuses to attack and such. The tarutaru rice can be bought at the cooking guild in Windy Waters. Pamtam Kelp can be bought by the venders on the Ship from Selbina to Mhaura.

94-95, Rice Dumplings is the results of this item and they are hard to make. Even once you hit the level 95 skill cap you will still fail a lot of these. Bamboo Stick can be bought from Vuliaie in Norg at H-8. Sticky Rice can be bought at the Tenshodo Shop at Lower Jeuno. The Dhalmel Meat can be bought from the vender that controls the Kolshushu region. Ahyeekih at H-10 of Windy Waters, Fiva at G-6 of Port Sandy and Yafafa at I-5 of Bastok Market are the venders to sell this. Coral Fungus can only be grown from what I heard, so just buy this at the auction house.

95-99, Finally the final step to get to 99, because Royal Jelly sucks. We get to make Sweet Rice Cakes, YAY! Gardenia Seed can be bought from Vuliaie at H-10 of Norg. Fresh Mugwort is only available from the auction house so buy it from there.

Congratulations, you are now at 99 cooking skill. Now I will explain on how to get from 99 to 100. The last item that you can make is cursed soup. If you notice on the chart it requires a royal jelly to make. This is an EX item, meaning you have to farm these yourself. And they are VERY rare. You can farm the Death Wasp in Rolanberry for the jelly, they are level 22-26, Death Jackets in Crawler’s Nest, level 33-42, or a NM called Awd Goggie, level 68 in Crawler’s Nest. All of the items needed to make the cursed soup have to be bought, made or grown. Good luck on getting from 99 to 100, as it is a royal pain in the ass ^^.

To any that feel the need to pass this around to other site please give credit to the creator, me ^^, as I don’t mine this guide being passed around, but I do mine those that try to get credit for something they didn’t do themselves.

Final Fantasy XI Gil.

This should clear up some misunderstandings about EFs.

An EF has some requirements before you can join. For our guild you must be San d’Orian, Rank 3+, and meet the level requirement for the particular EF of the week. An example is Zulkhiem – The level is 20 and it’s capped at level 30. So a post on the /lsmes would look something like this:

>> VALKRUM EF on SAT3pmEST << (lvl20, cap30)

That would tell you we are going to Zulkhiem on Saturday @ 3pm EST. You must be San d’Orian, Rank 3+ and lvl 20+. Also you would know your gear would need to be below 30.

Here are the basics of the EF. Usually they are run by me and two other group leaders that have gone on them before. If you have questions outside of what you read here ask your group leaders about it, they will most likely have an answer for you. The EF starts out by getting together an alliance of usually 3 groups. If San d’Oria is in 1st place we need 6 people per team, 2nd 5 people per team, 3rd 4 people per team. It’s never good to just have the bare minimum of people because the monsters are very tough. Once we all get assembled, it usually takes awhile. Listen for your party leader to tell you to "Join the EF". At that time you should talk to the Temple Knight (TK) at the gates. Select from the options Join Expeditionary Force > The Place of the EF (Zulkhiem) > "Join the EF" You should then see him cast a spell on you and an icon of crossed swords should appear where signet should be. Again, wait for your group leader to check and see if everyone has done that. Once they have he/she will say "My group warp." This means talk with the TK again and "Warp to the EF". At this time you will be given a Glyph of the gate you left from and be transported to the outpost, in this case the outpost in Valkrum.

Once you’re there buddy up with someone in case you get agro’d and start looking for the Beastman’s Banner. The banner is usually located on the sides of the map, on a wall. When you find the banner point it out to the rest of the teams and wait there. DO NOT CLICK THE BANNER! You’ll see people telling you anyways, but it’s very important that you do not click the banner. There will be someone designated as the "Banner Checker". The reason this is so important is that once the banner is clicked you will get the level cap and 4-5 monsters will spawn and attack whoever clicked it. So it’s very important everyone is ready when it’s finally clicked.

The monsters are no ordinary monsters. These are actual jobs with all the benefits we have in the jobs. The WHM has benediction and will use it, the RNG has Eagle Eye Shot and will use it, the BST has Charm and will make your friends attack you. Ask Saprykin all about how he killed Mastershake and me during one of the fights. Again, this is the reason you can’t click the banner before everyone is ready, you and the rest of the teams will be slaughtered. It isn’t a great way to make friends.

After your teams have successfully killed the monsters, raise the dead, cure the sick and glyph back to the gate. The glyph you recieved just before teleporting will warp you back to the gate from wherever you happen to be. That means if there isn’t a WHM that can raise… omg I hope that never happens in an EF… but if you home point (HP) by accident or something you can use the glyph to get back to the gate in San d’Oria.

When are we done?
This question is asked all the time. The answer is a bit complex. In each region there is certain influences from all the countries and the beastmen. I’m sure you’ve been in a region that was under beastmans control. The idea behind EFs is that every monster you kill, you gain influence for your country. If you kill all 4-5 monsters it’s better than killing just 1-2. So you’re done when your country is comfortably in the lead. You can check the influence in a region by checking: menu > region :and then focus the mouse on the region in question.

I’m sure there are things that are still confusing and things that I’ve forgotten to include. The best way to know what’s going on is to join one of the EFs and do it. Ask your party leader any questions you might have. These are some of the best times I’ve had, not just with the LS, but in FFXI all together.

How To Win Garrison (Final Fantasy 7 faq)

A guide to wining Garrison

First you must get the necessary items to participate in the event. Which item you can get depends on your home country. I highly recommend you bring a friend with the “Treasure Hunter” ability – TH2 even better.

If you are from Windurst: 7 Knot Quipus -drops off Yagudo Votary in Giddeus ( best spawn point – I-12 and H –14 )
If you are from Bastok: Darksteel Engraving -drops off Copper Quadavs in Palborough Mines (best spawn point – 3rd level – corners and the stairway to the burning circle )
If you are from Sand’oria: Red Cryptex – drops off Orcish Fighter in Yughott Grotto ( best spawn point – (unsure)- second map )

It’s not necessary for everyone to have an item to participate and you can participate in another country as long as a person from that country has an item to trade.

Next you need a team! I very strongly recommend doing this ONLY with friends and LS ppl. It takes a great deal of trust – I learned this the hard way..strangers lotting for all the loot and leaving. NOT FUN!! You’ll need 4 whm , 2 rdm, 3 pld, and 9 damage dealers. (blms are nice here with their –ga spells—but it’s a long fight … and MP will be drained fast so .. choose wisely)
**This is a level 20 cap restricted fight—make sure all your team knows this and has appropriate gear!! **

Once you have the item and a team set up head to the appropriate starting area outpost. For example, if you are from Windy, head to the West Sarutabaruta outpost. Set Home Point! Set up the alliances with 1 main healer ea. Set up each main healer at a “home base” point in the outpost ( I put them one in from of the guard and the others to the left and right) Make sure that each party member in the alliance knows where his “home point” is. Now have the person with the item trade (hopefully you have more than one person with items… this is one of those things you want to do at least 3 times) first you’ll see about 10 or so mobs spawn. Then you’ll see about 20 or so NPCs spawn.

Damage Dealers– jump into the fray.. don’t try to make sense of it.. it’s just chaos at this point for the damage ppl. Select a monster and pummel until he is dead then move on to the next one

3 main WHM healers – heal the damage dealers that’s your soul job.. make sure to rest whenever possible and juices would be VERY nice in this fight!!! (mp + gear is excellent too)

1 WHM back up – your job is to full time heal NPCS!! Scan the npc’s health at all time and heal as necessary – this is very important! The NPCs are not only the determining factor for your loot but also they help get rid of the mobs!! Heal them!! — don’t waste MP though.. make sure every bit of your cure will be significant.

2 RDM back ups- melee – but keep an eye for npcs or pt members that are in trouble .. at the breaks scan npcs and heal

3 PLDs – voke off the npcs in the fight. The Npc’s have very weak defense you’ll be a buffer

Make sure everyone knows their role and go for it!! There are 4 waves of mobs with the last one having a “boss” monster

Item distribution — item distribution should be clear to all BEFORE the battle – avoid a 18 ppl fight for items!!! My usual method? – the people with items don’t random lot – in the battle were they traded the item they get first pick (they did farm for the trade item after all) everyone else lots for the rest of the loot – whoever gets an item cannot lot again until everyone has an item!!

How many item you get depends on how many NPCs live you can get nothing (if all npc’s die) or up to 5 items per fight!

Items– Dragon Chronicles – rare/ex –items gives exp points
–garrison gear—
Sallet – level 19 – Def 5 MND+1 CHR+1
Tunica—level 18 – Def 15 Dex+1 CHR+1
Gloves—level 20 – Def 4 VIT+1 INT+1
Hose—level 21—Def 9 STR+1 DEX+1
Boots—level 18—Def 4 INT+1 MND+1

Every player gets an amount of gil depending on the outcome
— make sure everyone speaks to he guard to get thier level cap taken off.. then try it again !!

20-30k an hour with level 5 thief and any 40+ char

1.1 – What you need
1.2 – Where to go
1.3 – What to do (What you get)
1.4 – How to do the quests
1.5 – Conclusions, tips and tricks

1.1 – What you need

I felt pretty bad that my last tutorial was only for thieves. So I decided to bust out my all time favorit technique. This is pretty simple and not many people know about it. Again as always let us keep this between MPS. There is no reason to have this thing camped. Now with that being said lets get on to what you need! In order to do this you will ned the following:

1) A level 40+ character of any kind
2) A level 5 thief so you can have steal (this will be your sub job)
3) Some descent equipment if you are excatly level 40

1.2 – Where to go

If you are starting out at Jeuno simply make your way to Upper Jeuno and then to Sauromugue Champaign. At the Champaign you will want to make your way to the circled spot below via chocobo (see pic below). This is the same spot where people go to do the ranger quest. If for some reason you can’t see the pic or my tutorial is ageless it is located at (L-10).

1.3 – What to do

When you get to the spot you will see tigers, black tigers, or sabertooth tigers depending on how you look at it. The one in the cave is pretty easy to kill, but I wouldn’t kill it unless no one is there doing the quest. The tigers drop the following:

1) Tiger Hide
2) Tiger Fang
3) Also stealing from them will give you cockatrice meat.

The thing that is unique about this particular spot is pretty unknown. The tigers that are in this area have something that sells for around 20k for twelve of them. If you steal from these tigers they’ll give you Cocka Trice meat. Now if you steal successfully tweleve times during one hour that’s about 20k or more. However, these things also drop tiger hides which sell for 400 or if you convert them to tiger leather 2k per skin. Furthermore the tiger fang if you get 3 of them will sell for 2,100 in San’doria. This way I found is one of the coolest ways to make gil.

1.4 Tiger Fang quest

QUEST START: Southern San d’Oria Taumila at (E-9)
REQUIREMENTS: Fame level 3
REWARD: 2,100 Gil
HOW: There is no level requirement to do this quest, but you need a descent amount of fame to do it. Seeing that your level 40+ and your MPS members I’m sure you either have the fame or know how to get it. The quest is fairly simple you just trade 3 fangs and you get 2,100 gil. This quest is repeatable so you can do it as many times as you want. Simply talk to Taumila and trade ‘em the 3 tiger fangs and you get the money
DO YOU LOVE MAGDUST?: Yes

1.5 Conclusions, tips and tricks

Be careful not to link these guys otherwise you could be in trouble. Hit one then pull it out of the canyon so you won’t link ‘em. If you get in trouble just run away there is an exit to Meriphitaud Mountains right around the corner. This may go faster if you bring a friend along to heal and what not. If someone comes along to do the quest don’t attack the wounded tiger because that’s just mean

Good luck and God speed!
